Nobody wants to get behind the favourite and we’re all here for a brilliant underdog story.
Whether it’s Leicester winning the Premier League or a 25/1 shot at Kempton, those feel-good stories are crucial in sport, even if it costs the big man when paying out!
There is arguably no better story than trainer Shark Hanlon and his bargain runner Hewick. So Paddy headed over to see Shark as their preparations for the Gold Cup stepped up a notch and you can check out Episode 1 here.
And now, with under a week to go, episode 2 is out and Paddy’s enlisted the help of Fran Berry and our top trader Frank Hickey to take a look at Hewick’s chances, the opposition and how he’s shaping up ahead of his date with destiny.
"He's a cool customer." @jhanlonracing discusses Hewick's Gold Cup preparations in the latest episode of Shark Power.
It all started when Hanlon unearthed a right one in the form of Hewick. He cost just £800 and he is now a lively contender in the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
After success at Sandown and Galway last year – followed by a setback at Listowel in September – Hewick was entered into the American Grand National in October.
With the £111,111 prize pot up for grabs, the pressure was on – and Hewick delivered.
He went on to win comfortably by 11 and a half lengths to set up a dream Cheltenham success in the Gold Cup in March 2023.
So, is the best yet to come?
Paddy has gathered some cameramen and a crew to follow Hanlon on Hewick’s journey.
In the first episode, Shark tells us all about how he got the horse, named him, and campaigned him to American Grand National glory.
Episode 1 of our four part series is out and you can catch the full piece on the Paddy’s Racing YouTube.
