The 2022 Cheltenham Festival provided plenty of action, drama and entertainment – and the four championship races were no exception!

Honeysuckle was roared home after making it back-to-back victories in the Champion Hurdle, Energumene claimed a maiden Champion Chase crown for Willie Mullins, Flooring Porter blitzed the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle field once again, while A Plus Tard was electric on his way to claiming the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!

A whole season of hard work and effort went into landing the big prizes but fresh challengers await next season as plenty of exciting novices displayed their talent at the Festival ahead of stepping into open company.

Paddy Power’s traders have been busy little beavers and drawn up antepost betting markets for the 2023 Cheltenham Festival including the four championship races – and we’ve taken a deep dive into the odds.

Champion Hurdle

Constitution Hill delivered one of the most impressive performances at the 2022 Cheltenham Festival to rout the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle field. The five-year-old’s time also compared favourably to Honeysuckle’s in the Champion Hurdle, although the championship race was run at a slower gallop until the closing stages.

Owner Michael Buckley has talked up a “bold” plan to have a crack at Honeysuckle in the Paddy Power Champion Hurdle at the upcoming Punchestown Festival, although our resident jockey-turned-pundit Ruby Walsh reckons the two will wait until next year’s Cheltenham Festival to finally clash – and Paddy’s traders make Constitution Hill the antepost favourite.

Champion Chase

The second round of Shishkin v Energumene didn’t exactly live up to the hype as Nicky Henderson’s charge pulled up due to the testing conditions before the race completely fell apart when Chacun Pour Soi unseated his rider moments rider.

Energumene’s success ensured Willie Mullins got his hands on the Champion Chase for the first time in his training career. The rematch is surely on for next year but Paddy’s trader’s are struggling to split the pair.

Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle

Another bold front-running display ensured Flooring Porter became the first horse since the legendary Big Buck’s in 2012 to win the renewal two years in a row.

Gavin Cromwell’s charge is only seven so has plenty of time on his side to go for the hat-trick at next year’s meeting. Paddy’s traders make him the hot favourite ahead of Thyme Hill, Buzz and Albert Bartlett winner The Nice Guy.

Cheltenham Gold Cup

A Plus Tard displayed a devastating turn of foot in the closing stages to win the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup by 15l from last year’s winner and stablemate Minella Indo.

Trainer Henry de Bromhead’s establishing a bit of a stranglehold on the Blue Riband and his latest champ is the antepost favourite to win in 2023, although fresh opponents like Galopin Des Champs, L’Homme Presse and Monkfish could provide stiff opposition next year.
