Day 3 of Cheltenham 2022 starts with the Grade 1 Turners’ Novices’ Chase over 2m4f but it’s a pathetic turnout. In such a small field it’s hard to get away from the horse who will get an uncontested lead and that is GALOPIN DES CHAMPS. Last year’s Martin Pipe winner has looked a natural over fences for Willie Mullins this season and he should be very hard to catch under Paul Townend.
The Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle over 3m is next up. I’ll take a chance with the big-priced THIRD WIND for Hughie Morrison and Tom O’Brien. He was fourth in this in 2020 behind the reopposing Sire du Berlais and loves to run at a strong pace. He was off a mark of 141 that day and is back in 141 with a lovely racing weight. He ran all right behind Wholestone at Haydock last time and at the odds is worth chancing for a few quid.
Now the Grade 1 Ryanair Chase over an extended 2m4f. This won’t take long! ALLAHO was outstanding in this race for Willie Mullins last year and there is no reason why he won’t repeat the dose for Paul Townend here. It was a good win last time and he will be very hard to catch.
Now it’s the big one. The brilliantly sponsored Grade 1 Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle over 3m. I’ve long thought THYME HILL is the one here for the master trainer Philip Hobbs and Tom O’Brien and I’m hoping it’s a good day for Tom. The Aintree winner was fourth to Monkfish in the 2020 Albert Bartlett and should have won that day as Richard Johnson had a bit of a shocker. This season Thyme Hill returned with a poor run in France and then a fine second to Champ in the Long Walk at Ascot. He’s been laid out for this and stays really strongly which is key. The rain hasn’t come enough for old boy Paisley Park and defending champion Flooring Porter is clearly talented but quirky.
This is a Grade 3 handicap chase over an extended 2m4f. SPIRITOFTHEGAMES will be huge odds but might sneak into the frame at least for the Skelton team of trainer Dan and jockey Harry. I tipped him up eachway last time when he was a fine third at Cheltenham at decent odds and he loves this track. He’ll be staying on strongly and loves a decent pace to run at. He dropped 1lb since that last effort and might surprise a few people.
Here’s a Grade 2 mares’ novices’ hurdle over 2m1f. I have a feeling JP McManus is very hopefully DINOBLUE will be too good for this lot and be another for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend. The mare has only won a littler race at Clonmel, but she did it in style scoring by 15l and could be an absolute monster in this grade.

Finally on Day 3 the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup Amateur Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap Chase over 3m2f. COME ON TEDDY is unexposed over fences and might be suited to this test for Alex Hales and William Biddick. He’s been third in a Pertemps here before and seems to jump fences well enough. Stamina is no issue and he could be well handicapped.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
