We’re just a week away from the Cheltenham Festival, which means it’s the final episode of our antepost tipping podcast series as attention turns to the handicaps.
WELCOME TO PADDY POWER NEWS!
The From The Horse’s Mouth team ran the rule over the County Hurdle, with legendary jockey Ruby Walsh, Paddy’s trader Frank Hickey and tipster Rory Delargy giving their early fancies ahead of final declarations.

Rory Delargy:
“I’m looking for a classy horse that’s also well handicapped – and that’s Colonel Mustard. I understand that Cheltenham is very much on the cards and the County Hurdle is the preferred option, although it’s possible he could go for the Ballymore.
“It’s the perfect race for him as he hasn’t gone up anything for his run last time in Ireland. As he ran in a Graded race in the UK earlier in the season, the British handicapper hasn’t touched him either so he hasn’t got a spurious rise. He’s run a cracker behind Jonbon in a race that didn’t suit him and he ran very well behind Sir Gerhard at Leopardstown last time out. He’s one of the best bets of the Festival handicaps.”
Ruby Walsh:
“State Man is in the Supreme and Ballymore but if he was to run in a handicap it’ll be this or the Martin Pipe. Because of the track, it’s much easier for a novice to jump with handicappers on the New Course as the jumps are in a different position and they’re of more significance on the Old Course.
“I’ll have no hesitation tipping a novice in the County Hurdle so it’s State Man or Colonel Mustard for me here.”

Frank Hickey:
“Gringo d’Aubrelle has run off the back of a couple of nice horses in his time. He’s relatively inexperienced as he only made his rules debut in January 2021. He finished third in a bumper behind Noble Yeats, he was second to Blazing Khal on his hurdles debut in October, he then won a bumper at Navan and beat Adamantly Chosen at Fairyhouse. He went over for the Challow Hurdle and finished third. He was then beaten 19l in second to Dysart Dynamo.
“A mark of 136 is workable. It’s interesting that this is the only entry he has. He’ll do for me!”
