Tiger Roll is likely to make his final racecourse appearance at this month’s Cheltenham Festival as the popular little horse attempts to score at the meeting for a sixth time.
The Cross Country Chase has been earmarked as the dual Grand National winner’s final assignment after a historic Aintree hat-trick attempt was ruled out by owner Michael O’Leary due to a row over his handicap rating.

Tiger Roll crushed the field including previous winner Easysland in last year’s Cross Country to claim the renewal for a third time – and the 12-year-old is the favourite in Paddy Power’s Non Runner Money Back betting market to retain his crown.
Speaking on the latest episode of our Cheltenham Countdown podcast, Paddy’s resident jockey-turned-pundit Ruby Walsh brushed aside concerns over recent runs to back the Tiger to ‘go out in a blaze of glory’.

Ruby Walsh:
“Tiger Roll’s trying to win at the Cheltenham Festival for a sixth time. He’s a Triumph winner, he won the National Hunt Chase and, of course, he’s already won three Cross Country Chases.
“If you read into his form you can see a definite trend. He was last of six in the Boyne Hurdle this time last year. He was travelling quite well on the outside going to the third last but made a slight mistake and then cut out going to the last. It was a similar story for Tiger Roll’s last run in a handicap hurdle at Navan. He made all his ground out of the back straight before the third last, you thought he’s going to get involved but lo and behold he didn’t.
“I would think his run over hurdles in 2022 isn’t too dissimilar to his run over hurdles in 2021. If you remember, he went to Cheltenham last year and beat Easysland by 18 lengths.
“His win in the Boyne Hurdle in 2019 was freakish, but it was back in 2019 before his second Grand National victory when he beat Magic Of Light. He was fifth in the Boyne Hurdle behind Cracking Smart in 2020, he was last in the Boyne Hurdle in 2021 and he’s run in a handicap hurdle in 2022 because the Boyne Hurdle was a week later – it was just too close to the Cheltenham Festival.
“He’s a hard horse to oppose. Tiger Roll will go out in a blaze of glory and I don’t think anyone will begrudge him that!”
