Patrick Mullins’ Cheltenham Day Two tips
13:20 Final Demand
14:00 Ballyburn
14:40 Jimmy Du Seuil
15:20 Galvin
16:00 Solness
16:40 Jazzy Matty
17:20 Copacabana

13:20 Final Demand
The Turners Novices Hurdle looks the most competitive novice race of the week. The New Lion has to be taken seriously and I’m a big fan of The Yellow Clay, but we think the world of FINAL DEMAND.
We’re hoping he could be a Gold Cup horse in the future. We’ll be very disappointed if he can’t do the business in Wednesday’s opener.
14:00 Ballyburn
Only seven runners were declared and it looks like a big matchup for us, at least between BALLYBURN and Dancing City.
Ballyburn learnt a lot from his defeat by Sir Gino at Kempton over Christmas, and stepping up to 3m should suit his jumping and pedigree.
I schooled him last week, and he was very measured. The nature of the Cheltenham fences will help him settle, and his sixth gear will kick in up Cleeve Hill.
14:40 Jimmy Du Seuil
I really like JIMMY DU SEUIL. He has some top-class novice form behind Ballyburn last season, when second in the Gallaghers Novices Hurdle over course and distance.
He comes here not having run since May last year and runs off his novice hurdle mark.
His handicap mark allows for wriggle room, but he doesn’t have much experience running in a big field.
He jumps well and travels strongly and may be over-priced.
15:20 Galvin
The Cross Country Chase and Galvin looks the obvious one for me despite the race reverting to a handicap. Stumptown looked very good when winning here in December but Galvin is essentially running off level weights with Stumptown and looks the classiest horse in the race with good course form. He could be difficult to beat even at 11 years old.
16:00 Solness
Jonbon looks ‘gettable’ to me around Cheltenham as the undulations don’t really let him get into any rhythm with his jumping like he does at other tracks. Irish challenger SOLNESS has to have a major chance as his forward-going and rapid jumping style on this track and ground could see him cause an upset.
16:40 Jazzy Matty
The Grand Annual is always fast and furious and exciting to watch. One that catches my eye is JAZZY MATTY for Irish trainer Cian Collins.
He gets in at the foot of the weights, won the Fred Winter juvenile hurdle in 2023 here, and looks to have a huge chance with Danny Gilligan in the saddle.
17:20 Copacabana
I’ve plumped for COPACABANA in the finale purely because he’s been in the yard longer this winter and impressed me when he won at Navan on his debut.
It was a flip of a coin really, but he looks to have the temperament and ability to win this contest.
*A previous version of this piece listed Jonbon as the selection in the 16:00 race in error
