Cheltenham betting tips
Tuesday 11th March, 16:00: Champion Hurdle – Constitution Hill
Wednesday 12th March, 13:20: Turner’s Novices’ Hurdle – The New Lion
Thursday 13th March, 13:20: Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle – Sixandahalf
Friday 14th March, 16:00: Gold Cup – Galopin Des Champs
Champion Hurdle – Constitution Hill
Tuesday 11th March, 16:00
Nicky Henderson’s CONSTITUTION HILL looks a great pick on day one. He won this race in 2023 before missing out on last year’s Festival through injury, but has since returned with two victories at Kempton and Cheltenham last time out. Brighterdaysahead appears likely to be his main rival on the day, having won two Grade 1s this season, but Constitution Hill, who has won his last 10 races in succession, will take some beating if on top form.
Constitution Hill also holds more than enough appeal over his other potential rival here, Lossiemouth – who may opt for the Grade 1 Mares Hurdle at the Festival anyway. He is 8lb clear of Lossiemouth on official ratings and it’d need a sizeable drop-off for her to have any chance of reversing the form. If Constitution Hill runs his usual race, it’s hard to see him getting beat here.
Turner’s Novices’ Hurdle – The New Lion
Wednesday 12th March, 13:20
JP McManus bolstered his Cheltenham team with the purchase of THE NEW LION after his facile success in the Grade 1 Challow Hurdle. He didn’t come off the bridle that day, registering a fourth straight victory to remain unbeaten over hurdles. He’s won all of his career races for trainer Dan Skelton, with Harry Skelton on board for every victory. In fact, all four of his wins have been with relative comfort, with the smallest margin to second place a cosy three lengths.
Final Demand was an easy winner last time and holds obvious appeal for the Willie Mullins team, but he doesn’t have as much experience as The New Lion, who may just edge a thrilling battle at Prestbury Park.
Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle – Sixandahalf
Thursday 13th March, 13:20
SIXANDAHALF sprinted to the top of the betting for this race, following a commanding 12-length success in a Fairyhouse maiden hurdle. The dual Flat winner, officially rated 94 on the level, showed her aptitude for jumping, with quick and accurate leaps throughout.
This run followed a very respectable third of 30 in the Irish Cesarewitch last year and a win at Newmarket in July. She’s a strong finisher of races, which will prove vital around Cheltenham. A largely dry weather forecast can only help her claims after having won on good ground at Newmarket, she has a touch of class about her and looks a great bet on day three of the festival.
Gold Cup – Galopin Des Champs
Friday 14th March, 16:00
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS can emulate Golden Miller and Best Mate by winning the Grade 1 Cheltenham Gold Cup three times in a row. The 10-time Grade 1 winner firmly put second favourite Fact To File in his place at Leopardstown, scoring by a huge seven and a half lengths.
It’s hard to see Fact To File turning that form around here, especially at the scene of the selection’s greatest triumphs. Galopin Des Champs has won three of his four races at Cheltenham and his presence looks ominous for his rivals in this year’s Gold Cup. Willie Mullins will have him in top order for this race and his class should see him cross the line in front.
