13:10 Kelso – Helnwein
Three tracks on Saturday and there’s a really good day’s racing at the Scottish track where Helnwein can get us off to a winning start. The better ground is key to his jumping and he’s also had a wind operation which should help too. He’s the one to be on in the opener.
13:20 Newbury – Cloudy Glen (each-way)
I have a sneaky suspicion that Cloudy Glen (each-way) can run a big race with the cheekpieces on in this Veterans’ Chase over 3m 2f. He’s a bit of a character but ground conditions are in his favour and he’s an each-way player at a price, if all eight run.
13:45 Kelso – Grey Dawning
In the four-runner feature chase, the favourite Grey Dawning looks the obvious pick, but wouldn’t really want the ground to dry out too much. Iroko is the main danger but Grey Dawning should get back to winning ways if some of his back form is anything to go by.
14:05 Doncaster – Miss Cynthia
A 3m Mares’ Novices Hurdle where Miss Cynthia looks a leading contender. She has some very good Flat form and the track should really suit her. Lucy Wadham’s runner could be a bit of value.
14:20 Kelso – Mr Bramley
Mr Bramley makes plenty of appeal in the 2m 4f handicap hurdle. The key is getting him to relax in the early part of the race. He won well at Wetherby last time and a handicap mark of 130 looks fair. Course winner Nab Wood is an interesting runner and doesn’t look too badly handicapped either but if Mr Bramley relaxes early on, he looks the one to beat.
14:40 Doncaster – Homme Public
A competitive 2m handicap chase and my preference is for Homme Public. He’s blinkered for the first time and won this race last year. If he can keep tabs on the leaders, he should finish strongly.
14:55 Kelso – Roadlesstravelled (each-way)
Willie Mullins sends over Chart Topper from Ireland with Patrick riding and looks a player on his last two wins. The lightly-raced and unbeaten Castle Carrock comes in to the equation also and he kept on well to beat Diva Luna at Sandown last time on soft ground. The pick though is Roadlesstravelled. Ignore his last run at Aintree on Boxing Day on very soft ground. He’s officially the highest rated on previous form when winning his three previous starts.
15:15 Doncaster – Twig (each-way)
It could be a good day for the Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero partnership as they saddle Homme Public’s stablemate White Rhino in the Grimthorpe Chase over 3m 2f. Jockey Henry Brooke has opted to come to Doncaster rather than ride Billytherealbigred at Newbury and that could be significant. Twig could be an each-way player at a price.
15:30 Kelso – Tellherthename
The winner of this Morebattle Hurdle can chase a big bonus by winning at the Cheltenham Festival also and Emmet Mullins sends over Vischio. She could be very good but went up 14lb for winning at the Dublin Racing Festival. She can be tricky at the start though. Favour and Fortune will be suited by the drier game also. The one to be with is Tellherthename who made her seasonal debut when fourth to Sir Gino in the Fighting Fifth and hasn’t been seen since. Jonjo O’Neill obviously thinks a lot of him and if the market is strong for him we could be in business.
15:45 Newbury – Billytherealbigred
I’m tempted by Kandoo Kid on his second run after a wind operation having won the Coral Gold Cup in November. He’s main target is the Aintree Grand National in April but ran well when second in this last season, albeit off a 12lb lower mark. He’ll be competitive but concedes a lot of weight to Billytherealbigred. It’s a tough call but the latter can just shade it.
