13:10 Kelso – Real Stone
A new month starts with ITV Racing pumping out a huge number of races from Kelson, Newbury, and Doncaster, starting here with a handicap chase over 2m1f. REAL STONE bounced back to form last time at a big price and under the same positive tactics might be hard to beat again for trainer Dan and his brother jockey Harry Skelton.
My selection is up 6lb for that Wetherby success but his slick jumping will be an asset here against rivals who often make an error or two.
13:20 Newbury – Good Boy Bobby
Coverage at Newbury starts with this veterans’ handicap chase over 3m2f. A chance for GOOD BOY BOBBY to get back to winning ways. He has been a good boy over the years for Nigel Twiston-Davies but comes into this off a pulled-up effort at Wincanton in January.
The ground was heavy then, and his previous consistent efforts were on a better surface, so I’m hoping the ground here, which should be a bit better than soft, will be in his favour. Jamie Brace takes off a useful 5lb.
13:45 Kelso – Grey Dawning
Now the Listed Premier Chase over nearly 3m. This really should be a penalty kick for Dam Skelton’s Gold Cup entry and former top novice GREY DAWNING.
He has 7lb in hand of Iroko, also in at Newbury, at these weights, and I’d be pretty sure he’s a much better horse in any case. Obviously, he ran a shocker after an early mistake in the King George at Kempton, but this is a huge opportunity to get back to winning ways. Harry Skelton is on top.
14:05 Doncaster – World Of Fortunes
ITV go to Doncaster for this Listed Mares’ Novice’ Hurdle over an extended 3m. WORLD OF FORTUNES can take this prize to Ireland for Liam Kenny and former champion jockey Brian Hughes. Rated 134, she’s a pretty decent mare and rattled off a hat-trick before being outclassed in a Grade 3 and Grade 1 at Leopardstown. She stays well and is back down in class.
14:20 Kelso – Young Jack (each-way)
Here’s a handicap hurdle over 2m5f. YOUNG JACK is not the most sexy of these on paper, but he stays very strongly and is in good form right now for Chris Grant. William Maggs takes off a useful 3l,b and my selection kept on really nicely when third at this track. If they go a decent gallop, he might well pick up some pieces as an each-way chance.
14:40 Doncaster – Petit Tonnerre
A handicap chase over an extended 2m. PETIT TONNERRE was given a peach to win last time, and with plenty of pace in the race, it might set up for his young legs once again. Kevin Brogan gets the chance for the O’Neill team on a horse who has been out of favour for a long time. That all changed with his victory at this course on January 25 and while up 5lb it’s more about his mood than anything else.
14:55 Kelso – Dedicated Hero
Up in class now for the Grade 2 Premier Novices’ Hurdle over 2m2f. On ratings Roadlesstravelled is hard to beat, but he pulled up when last seen a long time ago.
DEDICATED HERO doesn’t have an easy task trying to give most of these 5lb or more, but he was impressive at Haydock last time in a race where the talented Royal Infantry ran a shocker. My hope was short of room that day, and his jockey dropped his whip but he still battled on for success. Ryan Mania takes the ride, and he should be in the mix again.
15:15 Doncaster – Surrey Quest (each-way)
The Grimthorpe Handicap Chase over 3m2f. SURREY QUEST will be gearing up for another Scottish National tilt but he’s got a massive each-way chance here.
Kevin Brogan rides for Toby Lawes after a fair third over further at Musselburgh last time. That came off an unseat at Newbury, and he can jump better than he did on the last day. If he gets it all together here, it’s hard to keep out the frame at the very least. I’ll have a few quid on each-way.
15:30 Kelso – Aucunrisque
The Morebattle Hurdle, which is a handicap, over 2m. Really competitive. I’ll chance AUCUNRISQUE, who had big each-way odds for naughty Chris Gordon, and his boy Freddie, who takes off 3lb.
The nine-year-old was back in form recently when winning at Ascot off 3lb lower but has been stuffed at Kempton and Newbury since then. He has a nice racing weight here and is used to this kind of hustle and bustle. A strong stayer at the trip.
15:45 Newbury – Kandoo Kid
The Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase over 2m4f. What a competitive renewal. Hopefully, all 16 turn up. Iroko is also in at Kelso. I see no reason why top-weight KANDOO KID can’t outclass this field for Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden.
He’s up to 152 now, having landing the race we all know as the Whitbread off 145 on seasonal debut. But that 7lb isn’t a massive difference and I’m not sure there are that many improvers in here. Obviously, my selection is back in trip, but he was second in this last year off 140 and has a victory here over Frero Banbou at this trip.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
