Paddy Power Media’s ‘From The Horse’s Mouth’ podcast ‘Cheltenham Countdown’ is back as host Tom Nugent picks the brains of the leading amateur jockey Patrick Mullins and well-known journalist and broadcaster Rory Delargy for their best Cheltenham betting tips.

In the sixth episode of this year’s series, the gang have looked at the Hunters’ Chase ahead of the 2025 Cheltenham Festival.

PATRICK MULLINS

It’s unlikely I’ll have a ride in the Hunters’ Chase. You don’t really pick up spares in this kind of race.

Ross O’Sullivan’s Ryehill was very impressive at Naas and that race is always a good pointer towards Cheltenham, but his jumping does leave a little bit to be desired. That was on soft ground and Its On The Line didn’t appear to turn up. He doesn’t have a huge amount of experience and he’s a younger horse. It’s a race where being older appears to be an advantage.

He looks the up-and-coming horse but Its On The Line sets the standard. Obviously, like Billaway he’s been second the last two years and Billaway was third time lucky. He doesn’t appear to be quite at his best this season, which could be a worry with a horse that races like that. I’m not sure he’s sulky but I pulled him up in Stratford and Emmet says he’s very lairy and lazy and you have to kid him along to get the best out of him.

He probably has to go and show he’s back to where he was, but would you want to be on a horse that has been beaten the last two years? Probably not.

Verdict

If I could ride one it would be Angels Dawn, who has won at Cheltenham and was running really well in the Kim Muir last year when falling two fences out. She goes back to Cheltenham, is dropping in grade I would say, and is not an overly old horse who could still be in her prime.
