14:10 Nollyador
The suggestion is NOLLYADOR, who is very lightly raced for his age and returned from a long absence with a pleasing run at Huntingdon in December. Sullivan Bay (second choice) has been in good form on the Flat and over hurdles for his new stable but will have something to prove if the ground turns soft here. Lelant has become well-handicapped and may be revitalised by this switch back to hurdling.
14:40 Gris Majeur
Preference is for GRIS MAJEUR, who got his act together over fences and ran a big race in defeat in higher-grade company at Ffos Las recently. Sheila Lewis’s 8yo remains well handicapped and now returns to the scene of two of his three hurdling wins. Intimate hasn’t shone the last twice but is not written off in view of his promising chase debut in December.
15:10 Laughing John
Star Of Guiting has the best form, but LAUGHING JOHN and Le Soleil Reve were making their debuts when they finished behind him (in different races), and both are open to significant improvement here. Nicky Henderson’s runner is given the vote.
15:40 Lagonda (NAP)
Fingers were burnt when Champagnesuperover came to grief at Catterick last month, but he was travelling well at the time, and it will be interesting to see whether his supporters wade in again. Preference, though, is for LAGONDA (NAP), who ran very well in a competitive C&D mares’ race in December and returns here after opening her chase account this month. Almazhar Garde was consistent last year and has considerably less to prove than some of the jaded veterans in this line-up.
16:10 Picture Of You
Alastair Ralph’s new recruit, PICTURE OF YOU, does not have an entirely convincing profile, but she seems quite versatile ground-wise and has a very good chance to open her account here if she can get anywhere near her best Irish form.
Youhadmeathello has been absent for 477 days since winning an Irish point but her form has been fairly well advertised under rules by the runner-up in the meantime. Crying Lightning was not beaten far in a Listed bumper last month and is next on the list.
16:40 Minniemum
Jo Lescribaa, whom Charlie Deutsch has presumably chosen ahead of stablemate Haut Folin, will take some beating, but it could pay to chance chasing newcomer MINNIEMUM. She ran well off this mark in a competitive hurdle last time, and, given her smart pedigree, she should be every bit as good in this discipline.
17:10 Pearl Smoke
The best-bred horse running here today is Our Super Six, which is by Frankel and out of an unraced sister to a Group 1 winner. The market should offer clues as to what’s expected from him and, indeed, the remaining newcomers, but as things stand, PEARL SMOKE is preferred over Hay Macleod, Donttellyamumjack, and Forthfactor. The selection is a 4-year-old filly armed with an allowance, and her yard has a good record in these races.
