14:40 – Marshman
He is the perfect two-from-two on a synthetic and looks as if he has the required speed to drop back down to the flying straight 5f here at Southwell. Last year‘s winner, Diligent Harry, lines up again, yet there may not be enough early speed to see him settle and record back-to-back wins in this.
15:15 – Champagne Prince
It looks like the team has realised he is an all-weather performer rather than a turf horse. He’s improved 19lbs recently and doesn’t look as if that’s his ceiling. He also has the added bonus of staying at least 1m 3f. Surely he’s going to drag Royal Champion out into deep water once they enter the long straight in the Winter Derby.
18:15 – Combustion
Combustion has clicked into gear for the team from a lowly starting point of just 47. He then managed to follow up from a mark of 50 and returns from exactly the same perch in another classified contest. This is his last free swing at the winner’s enclosure before the assessor steps him up into handicap company.
19:15 – Buraback
Buraback managed to go back-to-back at Wolverhampton in handicap company early in January and has continued to run well with two very solid efforts at Wolverhampton behind some red-hot in-form rivals. He looks like he will get his perfect set up now with plenty of pace on. Expect him to be flashing home fast and late under Josephine Gordon.
19:45 – Elterwater
Elterwater has been hitting the crossbar since a comfortable success here over 1m. Unfortunately, the assessor has raised her another 5 lbs without winning. She now steps back up in distance, which could well bring about the required improvement for her to grace the winner’s circle yet again and Billy The Kid (Billy Loughanae) takes over in the saddle.
20:15 – Rising Force
Both of his wins so far have come over this course and distance (1m). He looked all over the winner when travelling so well approaching the 1f marker at Kempton last time and was only caught right on top of the jam stick. Jordan Williams takes off 5lb and he will be hitting the line strongly, as there are a few suspect stayers in the line-up.
