13:45 – Wotter Trotter

The well-related WOTTER TROTTER – a half-brother to numerous winners, including the useful hurdle winner/chaser Monbeg Charmer (2½m-3m winner) and useful hurdle winner/fairly useful chaser Tokay Dokey – wasn’t up to quite a useful race at Newbury but his C&D debut prior to that was promising and he can come good back in slightly calmer waters. Hereford runners-up Guchen and Not So Sobers showed promise on their respective hurdle debuts, and head the dangers, along with Nicky Henderson hurdle newcomer Timetoshine. A French recruit, she should strip fitter for a recent run on the Flat at Lingfield, where she was sent off at 14/1; the market should help guide once again here.

14:15 –  Pittsburg

Having edged back down in the weights, PITTSBURG ran well in third behind a chasing debutant at this C&D a fortnight ago, and he could be ready to take advantage of his current mark which is now 4lb lower than for his last win. He is preferred to Thank You Blue, who represents an in-form yard and has been shown ability over fences, but could do with brushing up his jumping. Pescatorius enters calculations after two good efforts at Catterick. Chasing debutant Stardhem looks the type to do better over larger obstacles and appears to have ideal conditions, so commands respect.

14:45 – Punxsutawney Phil

Having won two of his last four starts, PUNXSUTAWNEY PHIL quickened right away in the straight at Newcastle last week and will be hard to beat if turning up in similar form under a penalty as he stays this longer trip just as well. Fellow recent winner Tigerbythetail is also respected, having stayed on best at Catterick last time. Course winner Playtogetaway is feared, after bouncing back to form returned to hurdles at Catterick last time, while Gustoso also has a win here on his CV and, much like Jubilant, should be more at home on this better ground, both having pulled up when last seen.

15:15 – Pismo Beach

It was by no means a strong race that PISMO BEACH was runner-up in at Warwick last month, but she shaped notably well in coming from the opposite end of the field to chase the winner, and is taken to get off the mark with likely further improvement. Her trainer Stuart Edmunds won this race with Hillfinch in 2022 and her stablemate looks to be going the right way. Smile Back, a Carlisle bumper winner who is stoutly-bred, and Sea Presenting, who has shown plenty to work with in two starts over hurdles, are considered the main threats, though any market support for Hello Cello stepping up in distance should be noted. The experienced Betty’s Tara is respected, though she doesn’t set an unattainable standard.

15:45 – Far Away West

The Dan Skelton-trained FAR AWAY WEST, one of two Timeform ‘Horse In Focus’ horses, found only an improving sort too good at Catterick last month and remains on a workable mark despite a 3lb rise. She gets the nod in an open-looking contest ahead of Dirty Den, who caught the eye running on from the rear to finish second at Wincanton last month. Soldier’s Leap, who bumped into an improving sort in second at Newcastle last time, and the consistent Highway One O Five head the dangers, and strong-staying front-runner Morandi Second will be a big player if allowed to set his own fractions.

16:15 – Royal King

Bottom-weight ROYAL KING has chasing experience from his days in France and arrives on the back of a solid hurdles run here last month. He makes plenty of appeal from the same mark, with the form of that race having a solid look. C&D winner Flamelco is feared most, with this less testing going likely to suit more than the heavy ground he faced in third at Uttoxeter last time. Teddy Blue has something to prove, but hasn’t been with his new yard long and is attractively handicapped, while the consistent Next Left looks more of a threat than Rumoursareflying, a chasing type who took a very heavy fall on his chasing debut earlier this month.

16:45 – Alexandra Larose

A competitive contest, but ALEXANDRA LAROSE was well clear of the third when narrowly denied on her Leicester handicap debut last month, and is taken to go one better. She was sent off at 100/1 and 40/1 before that improved effort (at 9/2) and the market should help guide to her chances once more. Love True had yet to be asked for her effort when coming down two out at Catterick last time and is a possible threat if at least none the worse. Queen of Steel has been the subject of an interesting trainer change and merits respect with her new yard in good form. Malinka and Seasmoke, a winner at Market Rasen when last seen in May, both make the shortlist.
