13:15 Ascot – Hardy Fella
ITV Racing returns Saturday with action from Wincanton, Haydock and Ascot starting here with a handicap hurdle over nearly 3m. A wide open affair. Bective Abbey promises much but this is hard after the lay off. HARDY FELLA has improved stepped up in trip for Emma Lavelle and after a decent second at Wincanton won a little race at Market Rasen last time. He’s gone up from 110 to 117 for those two runs but is still at the right end of the handicap. Harry Cobden takes the ride. An each-way chance.
13:36 Wincanton – Golden Ace
ITV Racing returns Saturday with action from Wincanton, Haydock, and Ascot, starting here with the Grade 2 Kingwell Hurdle over 1m7f. This is a huge chance for GOLDEN ACE, trained by Jeremy Scott, with Lorcan Williams on top.
The former Grade 2 Dawn Run Mares’ Hurdle winner at the Festival finally drops back in trip with a strong gallop assured. She simply hasn’t been getting home over further but has still been traveling like a machine.
Burnett Road should set a good pace while Brentford Hope can also go from the front. Everything is in place for bold show. Gets 8lb from Burdett Road with a 6lb difference in ratings. The last horse to win this and the Champion Hurdle was Katchit in 2008. Scott won this in 2014 with Melodic Rendezvous.
13:50 Ascot – Jingko Blue
Here’s the Grade 2 Reynoldstown Novices’ Chase over 3m. I don’t think JINGKO BLUE was ever really happy at Windsor last time, but managed to see off Lowry’s Bar when the latter made a crucial error three fences out.
Now Jingko Blue is 5lb worse off at the weights, but I suspect he can manage that difference, and he remains a talent to beat for Nico de Boinville and Lowry’s Bar. The idea here is that Jingko will head to the 3m Grade 1 novice at the Festival.
14:05 Haydock – The Flier Begley
A veterans’ handicap chase over 2m4f. THE FLIER BEGLEY is 4lb higher in the handicap with Nocte Volatus after beating that rival at Market Rasen last time. I tipped Nocte that time but he was outpaced and never quite able to go the pace.
I think that’s an issue for him, and The Flier Begley might well confirm the form under Jack Hogan, who takes off 3lb for Gary Hanmer. The old boy is in good shape.
14:25 Ascot – Country Park (each-way)
A handicap hurdle over an extended 2m3f. An open heat. I think COUNTRY PARK is interesting here. Essentially, he is a little frustrating for the Jonjo O’Neill team, but I’d be pretty sure he’s a better horse than his current rating of 121. First time cheekpieces is a decent move and a drop in trip is also something that should suit. So I’ll chance a few quid each-way.
14:40 Haydock – Botox Has
Up in class here for the Grade 2 Rendlesham Hurdle over an extended 3m. A good chance for BOTOX HAS for Caoilin Quinn and Garry and Josh Moore.
The stable has just come back into form after a quiet spell and Botox Has was very good when landing the prize last year. He goes particularly well at this track, and his third at Cheltenham last time behind Gowel Road wasn’t a bad effort. Will surely have more speed than Beauport.
15:00 Ascot – Snipe (each-way)
Here’s a handicap chase over 3m. SNIPE made a bad mistake in the closing stages at Doncaster last time before plodding on into a distant third behind Docpickedme in the Great Yorkshire Handicap Chase. He stays on the same mark of 128 and stays well, so a place chance at the very least for Dan and Harry Skelton.
15:15 Haydock – Yeah Man (each-way)
The Grand National Trial Handicap over an extended 2m5f. YEAH MAN stays all day and is in cracking form after a fourth in the Thyestes at Gowran and a third to Stuzzikini in the Troytown at Navan.
He is edging up the handicap but surely has a fine each-way chance at the very least for Gavin Cromwell and Sean Flanagan.
15:37 Ascot – LHomme Presse
The feature race of the day in the Grade 1 Ascot Chase over 2m5f. Corbetts Cross might not have the speed for this, and defending champion Pic d’Orhy is the one to beat on that score.
However, I’ll stick with LHOMME PRESSE who runs for Venetia Williams and Charlie Deutsch. The recent Cheltenham winner ideally needs a bit further and was nearly six lengths behind Pic d’Orhy in this last year. Jumping left was an issue that day and might well be again. But he has the class to be right in at the finish.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
