15:55 Plage De Havre (NAP)
Andrew Balding’s PLAGE DE HAVRE (nap) is going the right way and can gain compensation for losing the race in the stewards’ room last time. Gaassee looks the main danger after his Kempton near miss.
16:28 Asgard’s Captain
Much will depend on which version of Royal Approval turns up, the one who won nicely here in December or the one who blew out last month. If it is the former then he would have a good chance on this handicap debut, but ASGARD’S CAPTAIN looks the more solid option on his return to this C&D, over which his record reads 2111.
The in-form Charlie’s Choice will need them to go a good pace over this trip, but Yokohama is becoming attractively handicapped so therefore makes the shortlist.
17:00 Pockley
There should be a solid pace on here with a few of the field happiest when on the front end. That will suit Ballyare, Henery Hawk and Stallone but POCKLEY may be the answer. He’s operating at a significantly lower level than he was 12 months ago and took advantage with a narrow win over 6f here last week.
He has his quirks but Paul Mulrennan retains the ride and he can follow up. Lezardrieux has an absence to overcome but he’s another who has been much better than this level in the past and he could go well, while Kipp Kelly has no compelling recent claims but drops in grade and may fare much better today.
17:30 Golden Thorn
This may mainly concern the three handicap newcomers at the top of the weights. Blast The Dream is progressing with each start, while the extra furlong should suit Lady Mariko, but the vote goes to GOLDEN THORN. She ran very well in her sole attempt over this trip and the form has worked out well.
18:00 Warrant Holder
This maiden features two interesting debutants. Nordic Norm has enough to like on pedigree so is respected, but preference is for WARRANT HOLDER who makes at least as much appeal on breeding and represents a stable with a fine record here. If those two fail to sparkle, Redhot Whisper is the one most likely to capitalise.
18:30 Sugar Baby
Nothing comes into this in better form than Gustav Graves, but whether this confirmed closer will have the race run to suit in this small field has to be in doubt.
Three Beauz has to be considered after her near-miss here last week, while there may still be better to come from the unexposed Forest Gunner. However, the choice is SUGAR BABY who is 6lb below his last winning mark and is 4-6 in completed Class 6 handicaps.
19:00 Bella Kopella
An intriguing race for the grade with some progressive sorts locking horns with some well-treated opponents. Tomorrow Day has taken a shine to Newcastle and he’s high on the list, while Oriental Prince is on a sharp upward curve but with 5f perhaps more suitable.
In truth, a win for any of the eight runners could be explained away but BELLA KOPELLA was a shade unlucky when second to Captain Vallo here last month and she can make amends. The Gay Blade could be the one to chase her home.
