16:27 Alpine Trail
Staffordshire’s debut effort was nowhere near as disappointing as a near-15l defeat might suggest, and he could take a big step forward with the run behind him. Paratrooper and ALPINE TRAIL are newcomers of some interest, though, and the latter can further enhance Charlie Appleby’s superb strike-rate in AW novice events.
17:00 Makes Me Wonder
Arlecchino’s Rex looks like the pick of those with winning form, but there are potential improvers in the field. Blue Anthem and Invincible Melody (second choice) fall firmly into that category but so too does MAKES ME WONDER.
David Simcock’s 3yo was underwhelming on his nursery debut, but he was poorly positioned after a slow start and still looked green under pressure. Returning to 7f will suithim, and the promise of his earlier Chelmsford sixth earns him the vote.
17:30 Ornately
Khutulun looks solid and will go well, while Watkins is surely capable of better. However, ORNATELY appeals as a likely big improver this year. Although she needs to learn to settle better, she’s of interest now, making her handicap debut at a modest level.
18:00 Patrol
Stamina is a query for all of these and it looks a race in which to tread carefully. PATROL has been on the up for Dylan Cunha this winter and is tentatively preferred. No Release looked sure to win here on Saturday night (8.6f), and although his late antics there temper enthusiasm, he may prove best of the rest.
18:30 Level Up
Derek Shaw’s pair Buraback and Gustav Graves come here in top form and have conditions to suit. Gustav Graves appeals more of the two but Nelson Gay and LEVEL UP may fight this out. The booking of Rossa Ryan, who is 3-5 on him, tips the scales in favour of Level Up, who showed his well-being with a good second at Southwell last week and who can race off 2lb lower today.
19:00 Payment Plan
Grand Duchess Olga had a near miss here last time and should make another bold bid back up in trip, while Easter Icon has been running well over hurdles and has possibilities off a workable mark back on the Flat. However, top of the list is the progressive PAYMENT PLAN, who has won Tapeta in three of his last four starts including a comfortable success over C&D 16 days ago.
19:30 High Court Judge (NAP)
Several have possibilities, but the most striking contender is HIGH COURT JUDGE (NAP), who has won his last three starts, including an emphatic success at Lingfield ten days ago. He has a 12lb rise to deal with back in a handicap, but this 5yo has won off higher marks in the past and may well be able to extend his winning streak. The unexposed 4yo Lightningboltzoom went close on his recent handicap debut at Southwell, and he’s feared most ahead of Harlington and Saturday’s Newcastle runner-up Busby.
20:00 Southbank
Autumn Angel is better than she showed last time, but this may rest between the top three on the racecard. King’s Crown and Just Ten High have solid claims, but SOUTHBANK was back on the up in December, and his latest C&D second came at the hands of a rival who could do no wrong at the time.
20:30 Zaman Daar
Cooperation ran well at Southwell ten days ago and holds solid claims in a race lacking depth. This isn’t sure to be run at a frenetic pace though and Nevernay and Global Effort, two of the likelier pace angles, can feature prominently.
ZAMAN DAAR is more speculative, but he won a Windsor handicap off this mark last summer, and his reappearance seven weeks ago was more encouraging than the bare figures might imply. His yard have had a couple of recent winners, and he could take a good step forward.
