13:40 The Cypriot
THE CYPRIOT doesn’t have many miles on the clock, and he produced much the best effort of his short hurdles career under this conditional rider at Uttoxeter last time. He was well suited by front-running tactics that day and seems sure to launch another bold bid from the front. Morandi Second ran well here in November despite some errant jumping, so he’s respected along with Mr Globalist, an interesting stable-newcomer for the Lizzie Quinlan.
14:10 Surrey Belle
SURREY BELLE was a three-time winner on the Flat for Hughie Morrison, reaching a fairly useful level of form, and was picked up by current connections for 70,000 guineas. She shaped with plenty of promise when runner-up on his hurdling debut, too, well backed and going down fighting only to another promising sort. She looks a sure-fire improver and will be hard to beat with that experience under her belt. Gibbs Island is an interesting newcomer to hurdles and can take the silver medal.
14:40 Jakana
JAKANA hasn’t always looked straightforward, but she is building up a solid profile and she hasn’t reached her limit as yet. The form of her win at Southwell last time has received a couple of boosts since, so she takes preference over fellow hurdles winner Reel Rosie. Generous Scorpion has shown ability in points and should be able to play a part.
15:10 Raffles Wonder
RAFFLES WONDER showed near-useful form when winning his bumper in 2023, but didn’t quite reach those heights over hurdles despite winning a handicap at Hexham last season. He shaped well on his chase debut back at that track last month, also, jumping fine and travelling well. He flattered to deceive at Ayr recently, but is well worth another chance to build on his debut in this sphere in what looks a weak race on paper. Fearless Action can fill the runner-up spot once again.
15:40 Catch Catchfire
CATCH CATCHFIRE was well beaten in three starts over hurdles, but he was quickly switched to fences for his handicap debut, and proved a different proposition in first-time cheekpieces. He wasn’t fancied in the betting, but he’s from a good jumping family, and won with plenty in hand at Leicester last month. He wasn’t in the same form last time, but arrives totally unexposed and can confirm himself still on a good mark. He’s preferred to the in-form but much more exposed Old Page. Monaghan Boy is another to consider back off his proper mark.
16:13 Klitschko
KLITSCHKO looked promising earlier in his career and turned in a much better effort on his second start for this yard when hitting the frame at Catterick last time following wind surgery. He’s now down to a career-low mark and is taken to build on his latest promise. The consistent Freddy Robinson should give his running again, while Saligo Bay should be spot on for this after a few spins on the Flat for new connections.
