10:15 – Haaland
HAALAND hasn’t been with this yard long and went like the best at the weights when third over a similar trip to this at Kempton last week. He is just finding himself too far back after missing the break.
He closed all the way to the line, though, and he can defy this mark on that evidence. Hedonista, Red Flyer and Upepo head up the dangers.
10:45 – Book Of Life
BOOK OF LIFE was purchased for 55,000 guineas out of Andre Fabre’s yard and has dropped a long way in the weights since. Indeed, he started out in Britain from a mark of 88, but he’s now 25 lb lower in the handicap, and he had been shaping up well prior to a below-par effort at Newcastle last time.
Book Of Life failed to settle in a steadily-run race, but there should be a stronger pace on her, and he’s chanced to prove himself on a good mark now. Charlie Mason and Lady Wingalong are others to consider.
11:15 – Second Name
SECOND NAME’s sales price rose considerably to 270,000 guineas as a yearling and he’s started a short-priced favourite for both of his wins so far at Wolverhampton and over this course and distance.
He completed a straightforward task last time, having no problem dropping to five furlongs, making all of the running and just shaken up to assert. He looks a useful prospect and can prove an opening mark of 77 a lenient one.
Master of My Fate appeals as the one to chase him home ahead of in-form pair Catch Cunningham and Night On Earth.
11:45 – Humam
HUMAM is a half-brother to smart sprinter Vadream and he didn’t appear to get home over seven furlongs on his debut at Newmarket in October. He is travelling well but not finding as much as expected.
He showed improved form when runner-up to a nice type at Doncaster next time and that form sets the standard in this field.
The switch to all-weather may help, and seven furlongs round here shouldn’t be a problem, so he’s expected to go one place better, at the main expense of Backspin, who showed much-improved form despite still looking very much a work in progress at Southwell last month and he’s bred to be suited by further than sprint trips.
12:15 – Monsieur Beaulieu
MONSIEUR BEAULIEU has shown improved form since switching to all-weather, successful at this course on his first start in December before a good third from the widest drawback here 18 days ago.
The return to six furlongs should suit and he’s got an excellent draw in stall 1, so he is taken to resume winning ways, though Many A Star also arrives in good form and isn’t taken lightly under a penalty. The Thames Boatman could also be in the mix.
12:50 – Kalamunda
Cases can be made for several, but the tentative vote goes to KALAMUNDA, who scored over course and distance in the middle leg of a hat-trick last year and picked up where he left off after seven weeks off when a good fourth at Kempton recently.
That run should have put an edge on him and he will remain competitive. Invincible Aura proved better than ever when winning over course and distance earlier this month, so he can give the selection the most to do, with So Quiet and Helm Rock another couple worthy of a mention.
13:25 – Charlotte’s Web
CHARLOTTE’S WEB maintained her unbeaten record in handicaps when successful in the trial for this race over course and distance in December, having all bar the runner-up beaten before the final furlong and showing a good attitude to wear down the reopposing Elladonna.
The Crisfords have won the last two editions of this race with similar types and she looks the one to beat despite an outside draw. Santorini Star is feared most as she bids for a hat-trick, making only her fourth start, while Charmaine has been shaping up well and is another to note.
