11:55 – Beau Quali
Having finished runner-up in three of his four starts over hurdles, BEAU QUALI appears to have found a good opportunity to open his account. He’s been expensive to follow, but has done little wrong, and this doesn’t look a deep race, so he can go one place better, likely at the expense of Broderick, who failed to justify strong support at Sedgefield on Boxing Day but pulled a long way clear of the third.
12:25 – Queens Wish
An ordinary-looking maiden, but the one that stands out is QUEENS WISH, who transferred to Dan Skelton’s yard for €140,000 after winning her sole outing in Irish points. Those with previous experience don’t set the bar too high so she won’t need to be anything out of the ordinary to get her Rules career off to the perfect start. Forsa Bay and Clondaw Fame aree fancied to give her most to do.
13:00 – Juventus De Brion
Dan Skelton sends a strong team to Newcastle on Thursday and JUVENTUS DE BRION is another excellent chance for the yard. He looked raw when runner-up to an above-average sort at Chepstow in October, not at all knocked about, and finishing with running left. There should be more to come from him and this looks an excellent opening. Benmore has more to offer and French Emperor isn’t without hope.
13:35 – Rattling Road
RATTLING ROAD is a typically big, imposing sort from Lucinda Russell’s stable and he jumped accurately when running out a ready winner at Hexham last time, showing improved form from his debut in this sphere. He’d plenty in hand on that occasion, so is an obvious choice to defy a 6lb rise in the weights. Reilly is a big danger from a handicapping perspective and A Moments Madness looks an interesting chasing debutant.
14:10 – Soldier’s Leap
SOLDIER’S LEAP improved straight away for the switch to handicaps in second at Fontwell last month, much shorter in the betting than previously, and doing well to sustain his effort given how keen he was in the early stages. His lightly-raced profile offers plenty of hope, so he’s taken to go one better in a first-time tongue strap. Authorized Mission improved after suffering interference in a C&D novice on his most recent outing and could go on again now venturing into a handicap, Hawk Stone is another to note on return, having built up a positive profile last season.
14:45 – Mister Smarty
MISTER SMARTY has returned from a break and is thriving, winning back-to-back handicaps at this course and Wetherby last month, and he has the right circumstances (best in well-run races) again, so is fancied to complete a hat-trick in a competitive contest. It looks wide open otherwise, with cases to be made for plenty, although Prince Nino looks the pick of the opposition.
15:20 – Six One Nine
SIX ONE NINE has a superb record at this track – four-time course winner – and he should be spot on following a respectable return at Sedgefield in November when ridden more patiently than usual, so with better expected, he gets the nod ahead of Treaty Boy, who shaped best for a long way last time. Empty Nest won a weak race at Wetherby three weeks ago, but remains on a feasible mark.
15:54 – Geordie Mackem
GEORDIE MACKEM made a bright start at Wetherby three weeks ago, strong enough in the betting, but finding two Olly Murphy-trained debutants too strong. He left the impression he’d come on for that outing, so there should be more to come, and he is taken to see off penalised Carlisle-winner Blue Carpet. Soldier In Mayo is a newcomer to note.
