14:00 – Sol Cayo
SOL CAYO isn’t long with this yard and has put up two fine efforts over this course and distance on his last two starts, scoring convincingly last time, produced to lead two furlongs out and well in command soon after.
He isn’t handicapped out of it off his reassessed mark, so he gets the nod ahead of Alpine Sierra, who wasn’t seen to best effect behind Midnight Lion on New Year’s Day. Midnight Lion is a definite player if another soft lead is allowed.
14:35 – Lady Of The Garr
LADY OF THE GARR has been running consistently well for a while now, particularly at this track, and she should be sharper for her latest effort in a fair handicap, which was her first run for three months.
She is in lesser company now and gets the narrow vote over Dash Gordon, who makes his debut for Mick Appleby after scoring on his final outing for Alex French and has joined shrewd connections. Blackcurrent isn’t without hope, either.
15:10 – Studious
This can go the way of STUDIOUS, who created a good impression when going in at Wolverhampton after a gelding operation on his handicap debut. He attracted support and travelled fluently, quickening up well once in the clear.
A subsequent 6 lb rise is fair and he’s strongly fancied to follow up. Sweet Cicely appeals as the one to chase him home on the back of his excellent Wolverhampton second, with Cuban Lynx and Penelope Valentine also in the mix.
15:45 – Arantes Nascimento
This is competitive enough for the grade, but ARANTES NASCIMENTO very much caught the eye when narrowly beaten over this course and distance last time and is expected to go one place better now.
He was still travelling well when hemmed in by horses entering the final furlong and finished well once in the clear. He can prove himself well handicapped now, likely at the main expense of Bobby Joe Leg, who is weighted to have a big say and next on the list ahead of in-form duo Streak Lightning and Lahab.
16:15 – Baikal
BAIKAL is an American-bred filly shaped with plenty of encouragement on her debut at Kempton last month. She was strong in the market on that occasion, sent off much shorter than most two-year-old debutants from this yard, and she would have likely gone close to winning from a better position.
She was left with too much to do, but with that experience under her belt, she’s expected to prove much sharper now. Pacifist, who sets the standard on form, looks the obvious danger.
16:45 – Beale Street
BEALE STREET is the youngest in this field and arrives in good form, recording a couple of wins over this course and distance in his last four starts.
He left the impression he’s still in top form last time, too, doing best of those who were ridden close to a strong pace, and he’s expected to prove himself still on a good mark now. Showtime Mahomes is down to a good mark and along with Novak, they are feared most.
17:15 – Brazilian Queen
This could turn messy with little pace on paper, but the lightly-raced BRAZILIAN QUEEN is the most interesting runner, having won well over this course and distance last week.
She can follow up that victory at the expense of Emily Post, who wasn’t ideally placed when disappointing last time, and Giselles Izzy, who was too keen when finishing fourth at this track last week.
