13.50 Sandown – Jupiter Du Gite
Weather permitting, ITV Racing Saturday comes from Sandown and Wincanton, with the action getting underway with this handicap chase over 2m4f. Lots of in-form horses in here.
JUPITER DU GITE will set some of these a jumping test from the front and it might be hard to keep out the frame for Gary and Josh Moore. Freddie Mitchell takes off a tasty 5lb as he did last time at this track when the pair ran a decent third behind Hoe Joly Smoke. That was over 3m and I think this trip is ideal.
14:05 Wincanton – Siam Park
The action at Wincanton on ITV starts here with a handicap hurdle over 1m7f. A pretty motley bunch here. SIAM PARK has been a real flop in recent runs and can’t be fancied at all on what he has shown of late.
That said, he has two very good efforts at this track in maiden company and a mark of 97 should be very workable. To be honest, if he does nothing here, it’s hard to see him ever doing much over hurdles. Harry Cobden rides for Joe Tizzard.
14:25 Sandown – Della Casa Lunga
A Listed Mares’ Hurdle over 2m4f. DELLA CASA LUNGA, with a rating of 138, really should be hard to beat if repeating her effort over Christmas at Kempton.
The mare had been given wind surgery after finishing second in November and she was right back to her best for that success. This trip is half a mile shorter, which is probably not ideal, but she still brings a decent level of form to the table. Clive Boultbee-Brooks trains with Richard Patrick on top.
14:40 Wincanton – Nocte Volatus
Here’s a Veterans’ Handicap Chase over 2m4f. NOCTE VOLATUS is in decent shape and after a fine success at Chepstow, he kept on well at Ascot last time to chase home the useful Gemirande.
This trip is absolutely what he likes and while he has no track form, he’s gone all right at Sandown before, which is vaguely similar. Cameron Iles takes off 7lb and knows the horse well, while Tom Lacey trains Wincanton at 15:15.
15:00 Sandown – Eldorado Allen
A Veterans’ Handicap Chase over 3m. Some right old plodders in here. ELDORADO ALLEN is not one of them, and it was only just over a year ago that he was fourth in what everyone knows as the Hennessy at Newbury.
Since running in the Grand National, he’s run twice this season, finishing second at Warwick and third at Cheltenham behind Numitor. Copperhead was in second that day, but I have a feeling he can reverse the form as he ran on really well. Brendan Powell is on board for Joe Tizzard.
15:15 Wincanton – Kado De Joie
A handicap hurdle over an extended 2m5f. A few up in trip here so it’s hard to know who will be best suited. That said, KADO DE JOIE is improving fast and will surely go well for Nicky Henderson and James Bowen.
The recent winner at Fontwell and Lingfield has been keeping on well from off the pace. He might find more over this trip, as he must do to overcome a mark of 119. Henderson has started the New Year in great form.
15:35 Sandown – Honky Tonk Highway
A handicap hurdle over 2m. Really tough to sort this out with many improvers. I’ll chance HONKY TONK HIGHWAY for jockey Harry and trainer Dan Skelton. The mare stays well and was a fine second at Warwick in November.
She’s been to this track since over this trip to score in a small field, and while she does face some pace pressure here if she wants to front run, she should at the very least put up a bold show off a rating of 119 on handicap debut.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
