13.25 Leicester – Latenightrumble
It’s a busy ITV Racing Saturday from Leicester, Newbury, and Leopardstown, starting here with a handicap chase over an extended 2m6f. LATENIGHTRUMBLE is related to the useful Latenightpass and had some useful point form before getting off the mark Under Rules when scoring at Wetherby last time.
He was all out there and is up 6lb, but he travelled well into the race, and I suspect there is more to come. Jack Andrews takes off 3lb for Tom Ellis.
13.45 Newbury – Mr Hope Street
Newbury coverage begins with this handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f. Decent race this. MR HOPE STREET is improving all the time, and he might well be able to defy a mark of 124, having started this term off 103. The Dan Skelton runner stays well and, after just eleven runs, may have more to give. He was convincing at Warwick last time. Harry Skelton is on top.
14.00 Leopardstown – Noble Yeats (each-way)
ITV show this Grade 1 Savills Hurdle over nearly 3m. A very odd race with a mixture of hurdlers and chasers. I’ll chance the former Grand National hero NOBLE YEATS each-way for Emmet Mullins and Donagh Meyler.
All their roads will lead back to Aintree in April, but my boy has a first-time hood on, and he’s not a bad hurdler, as he showed when landing the 2024 Grade 2 Cleave Hurdle at Cheltenham. That defeat of Paisley Park and Strong Leader would put him right in the mix here, and he can go well and stay fresh. Stays very strong.
14.20 Newbury – Surrey Quest (each-way)
The Mandarin Handicap Chase over 3m2f. I like SURREY QUEST each-way here. My hope, Surrey Quest, will need to be still improving off a mark of 139 as it’s the highest he’s ever raced from.
However, he’s been very consistent in a light career and his last two efforts have been tremendous. A second in the Scottish National was a fabulous performance and he returned in November in that position again at Cheltenham behind Abuffalosoldier. He jumps well, and he should put up a bold show. Toby Lawes trains with Kevin Brogan on top.
14.35 Leopardstown – Galopin Des Champs
The other race ITV broadcast from Leopardstopwn is the Grade 1 Savills Chase over an extended 3m. I’d be all over the dual Gold Cup hero GALOPIN DES CHAMPS here for Willie Mullins and Paul Townend. He’s back up in trip here to a distance which he stays very strongly, and while Fact to File beat him in the John Durkan I have no idea why people take any notice of that form which is only over 2m4f. Spillane’s Tower did nothing for it in the King George VI Chase on Thursday.
14.55 Newbury – Regents Stroll
Up in class for the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle over an extended 2m4f. This looks like a tremendous race on paper. I’m surprised REGENTS STROLL is not a favourite at the time of writing, and he will do for me for Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden.
He hacked up on his hurdling debut on this track even though he made one bad error and, other than that, jumped well. He’s always promised to be very good, and connections think the world of him.
15.10 Leicester – Invincible Nao
A handicap chase over 2m4f. INVINCIBLE NAO didn’t do much on his return at Sandown, but that was less than two miles, and he stays this trip well. He’s been dropped a couple of pounds for that effort, and when he last ran off this mark at this trip, he was a fine second at Sandown. He should go well for Gary and Josh Moore with Coiling Quinn on top.
15.35 Newbury – Shanagh Bob
A novices’ limited handicap chase over an extended 2m6f. I’m giving SHANAGH BOB another go. I love this horse, but I made a fool of myself at Uttoxeter when I was there getting very excited about him only for the six-year-old to finish last in a five-runner event.
I’ll keep the faith, though, as he’s always promised to be a really good staying chaser, and while he didn’t always jump well last time, there were signs that fencing is not an issue. I give him another chance here, it’s Christmas. Nicky Henderson trains with Nico de Boinville on top.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me, Paddy?
