11:55 – Wellington Arch
WELLINGTON ARCH showed ability in bumpers last season and made an encouraging start over hurdles when runner-up at Exeter last month, admittedly as the last of two finishers.
He couldn’t go with the odds-on favourite who had the benefit of hurdling experience, but he offered plenty to work with and is entitled to progress for the experience.
He stands out as the one to beat and can get off the mark over hurdles at the chief expense of winning Irish pointer Throatlash, who is respected on his hurdling debut for Donald McCain.
12:25 – Disco Annie
DISCO ANNIE has progressed well over hurdles this season and bagged back-to-back handicaps at this venue last month before running about as well as could have been expected when sixth up in grade at Newbury last time.
She was runner-up in an Irish point and is expected to make her presence felt on her chasing debut.
King of Tara built on his comeback effort when an encouraging fourth in a warm-looking handicap hurdle at Chepstow last time and, as one who looks likely to take well to chasing, he is also entitled to plenty of respect.
13:00 – Deep Strato
DEEP STRATO has failed to make an impact over hurdles so far, but he did show something to work with on the first of those starts. Had he not made a bad mistake on the final flight, he may have finished in the frame at Newcastle.
It’s also worth noting that Deep Strato is a winning pointer and a half-brother to the smart chaser Visionarian, so there are reasons to be optimistic that he can prove better than a lowly mark on his handicap debut.
13:32 – Grandads Cottage
GRANDAD’S COTTAGE showed useful form over fences last season, registering a decisive five-length win at Leicester in January, and he wasn’t disgraced when eighth in the Topham Handicap Chase when last seen in April.
Trainer Olly Murphy has his team in excellent order, a positive outcome for Grandads Cottage on his return to action. He gets the vote over the hat-trick-seeking Flic Ou Voyou, who is expected to give another good account of himself.
14:07 – Icare Allen
ICARE ALLEN took advantage of a much-reduced mark when a four-and-a-quarter-length winner at Uttoxeter last month, and he can cope with a 7 lb rise in the weights now that he has stopped the slide.
He showed useful form in some competitive handicap hurdles for Willie Mullins towards the beginning of last season, notably finishing fourth in the Galway Hurdle, so he remains with plenty of handicapping scope.
14:42 – Rock Of Star
ROCK OF STAR was strong in the betting on his first start for Rebecca Menzies (previously with Alexandra Dunn) on his reappearance here in October.
However, he fell at the eleventh fence when seemingly still going well.
That was too far out to predict how he might have fared, but he’s potentially well treated off a mark 2 lb lower than the one he defied at Chepstow in April 2023, and it would be little surprise were he to prove too good for these rivals in class 5 company.
He has a 5 lb edge on Timeform’s weight-adjusted ratings.
15:15 – Gintime
GINTIME‘s dam, Irish Lass, won a bumper on debut and is a half-sister to the Grade 1-winning novice hurdler Airlie Beach, so she makes appeal on paper.
She starts out with trainer Nicky Richards among the winners, and it would be a little surprise if she struck on the first attempt.
Oh Clare, who was a promising fourth over this course and distance last month, sets the standard among those with experience and is a big player.
