13:50 Cheltenham – King Turgeon
ITV Racing is back on Friday from Cheltenham and Bangor, getting under way here with a handicap chase over 3m2f. Many of these were meant run at Aintree over the weekend. Four or five of them like to race close to the speed, so there should be plenty of pace on. KING TURGEON was on 118 when hacking up at Chepstow first time this season, and now he’s on a mark of 133, after scoring at Aintree last time so this will not be easy. That said, his jumping was brilliant over normal fences at the Welsh venue – just watch him down the home straight – and he could just sit behind the leaders and come through strongly in the closing stages. He’s only six-years-old, so open to improvement. Ciaran Gethings rides for David Pipe.
14:05 Bangor – Kevin’s Pride
Here’s a maiden hurdle over an extended 2m3f. KEVIN’S PRIDE, a debut Kilbegganb bumper winner, didn’t jump well on his debut over hurdles at Carlisle. In the circumstances, he did well to rally for second, and while this drop in trip is not ideal, he should be bang there for Brian Hayes and John McConnell.
14:25 Cheltenham – Shan Blue
Another handicap chase, but this time for veterans, who are 10yo or older over an extended 2m4f. Quite a few of these could absolutely bomb out, so at this trip it might be the time to catch one-time super classy SHAN BLUE, for Harry and Dan Skelton. The old boy – who was 20 lengths clear, when falling three out in the 2021 Charlie Hall – has been over 3m in his last two starts and not disgraced even though I feel this is his distance. He’s dropped a couple of pounds to a mark of 141 and will have more speed than some of these.
14:40 Bangor – Thanksforthehelp
A handicap hurdle over nearly 3m. THANKSFORTHEHELP had been out of form until quietly fancied at Cheltenham last time, and running a decent fourth, behind Doyen Quest – who is out today in the 3.35pm at Cheltenham. The David Pipe runner ran on well that day, and should have every chance here off the same mark, if just repeating the performance. Kevin Brogan is on top for the master of Pond House.
15:00 Cheltenham – Mister Coffey (Each-Way)
Cross Country time now, with a handicap chase over an extended 3m5f. I never ever thought I’d do this ever again – but I’m tipping up the loser MISTER COFFEY as an eachway shout, a horse that has never won over fences. Will he make it 15th time lucky over the larger obstacles? The handicapper has given him a chance, dropping him from 142 to 140, despite a fair second at the track last time. Nico de Boinville will need all his skill for Nicky Henderson, but he is quite good!
15:35 Cheltenham – Doyen Quest
A handicap hurdle over 3m. DOYEN QUEST is up 10lb for his success over course and nearly distance last time, but he might still be good enough, and be another for the Skelton team of jockey Harry and trainer Dan. My selection keeps improving and he’s done better since stepping up in trip. He has every chance.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
