11:47 – Laudable
Having rattled off a hat-trick on turf in August and September, LAUDABLE is shaping up nicely, much better than the result over C&D three weeks ago (unable to sustain his effort off the bridle after making a fluent move into contention). In a change of headgear, he could be the answer, though Tuesday’s easy Southwell winner Swinging London has to be feared if turned out quickly under a 5lb penalty. The well-handicapped Galahad Threepwood is another to note, along with course winner Three Platoon who is better than last seen, having refused to settle.
12:17 – Cadarn
The George Boughey-trained CADARN found a well-bred rival too good as odds-on at Wolverhampton a month ago, but it wasn’t a bad effort by any means, so he’s worth another chance having shaped well on all three career starts to date. His trainer has a 22% strike-rate at this track. The longer trip should be in range for the well-bred Stifling (returning from a long time off), and along with Royal Approval – gelded since an underwhelming debut in a strong Sandown maiden in the summer – are potential improvers who need considering.
12:47 – Asgard’s Captain
The fairly-handicapped ASGARD’S CAPTAIN ran right up to form on return from five months off at Wolverhampton in November and, with his AW record a positive one, he’s fancied to build on that in a stiffer finish/longer trip here in his favour. Wonder isn’t obviously as well treated, but as a lightly-raced three-year-old, there may be more to come from him (from the family of Group 2 winner Highland Knight), with the consistent Shimmering Sands also of interest, back up in distance. Something (excellent record here) and Up The Jazz are two others of strong interest.
13:17 – Urban Road
Top-weight URBAN ROAD moved through the race like a horse at the top of his game ,when scoring over C&D nine days ago, and can defy a 5lb penalty. Following a short break, Hot Team should be in the thick of things off his current mark, with the returning hat-trick-seeking Federated a player if ready to go on a return from 204 days off. The well-handicapped C&D winner Midnight Lion is respected on his stable debut, while the step up in trip is a step is still a question mark for No Nay Nicki, but she’s on a good mark if lasting home now a little bit older (hasn’t in the past).
13:47 – Rock Armour
A rum bunch, including quite a few who haven’t been with their current yard for long. The market should help guide given connections rarely get it wrong, but ROCK ARMOUR has been knocking on the door of late, and the application of headgear (cheekpieces) can see him get off the mark. The well-handicapped Rampant made a positive start for this yard, as a close third over C&D five weeks ago, so is next best ahead of Powerful Response. Russian Virtue’s best runs have come when dictating, and as there isn’t a lot of obvious pace, so his chance could be increased if similar tactics are adopted again.
14:17 – Bella Fortunata
BELLA FORTUNATA looks far from the finished article, but showed improved form to make a successful nursery debut over C&D five weeks ago so remains of interest under just a 4lb rise in the weights. Blue Lakota has gone close, switched to nurseries here for the last two, and is the obvious threat ahead of Black Sky who finished with running left having been short of room two furlongs out in fifth over C&D last month. The step back up in trip, and application of a tongue-tie, should see an improved performance from top-weight Avalon.
14:52 – Variety Island
Lots of winning form at the track in this competitive handicap – and the feeling is the market should prove a good guide – but the nod goes to the lightly-weighted VARIETY ISLAND who confirmed himself back in form by going close over C&D last time and remains of interest despite a 2lb higher mark. My Boy Jack, who is consistent and has gone close for Andrea Pinna, should go well again along with veteran front-runner Blackcurrent. The drop back to 6f should suit Mumcat, though her best recent efforts have come when fitted with cheekpieces, which remain absent.
15:25 – Vibrato
VIBRATO and Red Maids are both going for the hat-trick, with narrow preference for the unexposed three-year-old, who looks an improved performer since the cheekpieces and tongue-tie were dispensed with. The Cookstown Cafu runs this track well, and enhanced his good record here, in second last month and is another to consider along with Northern Spirit who would appreciate a strongly-run race. Bowman looks the most obvious candidate to go forward, but holding a prominent pitch – as Vibrato tends to – could be the best place to be.
16:00 – Fortunate Star
Preference is for the in-form FORTUNATE STAR, who rediscovered the winning habit of late and remains fairly treated on old form, winning off a 3lb higher mark last April. Though dropped markedly in trip, Tickets heads the list of dangers which includes Sheriff’s Call (handicap debut), and C&D winners Better, Azucena and Show Me Show Me. Cheekpieces could rejuvenate the well-treated Doddie’s Impact.
