12:35 – Boys Of Wexford
BOYS OF WEXFORD failed to complete in attritional conditions on his return at Stratford in October but showed the benefit of that outing when successful at Fontwell last month, asserting from the second last and forging four and a quarter lengths clear.
Since the cheekpieces were applied, he’s proved more reliable than most at this level. Given that he jumped out to his right last time, the return to a right-handed track is likely to suit him, and a 5 lb rise in the weights shouldn’t prevent another bold bid.
13:05 – Pigeon House
PIGEON HOUSE was pulled up when last seen at Listowel in September on his final start for Jessica Harrington. But he’d registered a second victory of the campaign when successful at Ballinrobe on his previous start and he sets a good standard on that form on his first start for Jennie Candlish.
He can put his experience to good use and gets the nod over the unexposed Sayva, who put in a superb round of jumping when he was a comfortable winner at Newcastle last time.
13:35 – Secret Des Dieux
SECRET DES DIEUX looked like a tricky customer when successful at Fakenham last month. He raced freely and jumped poorly before ultimately powering clear of his rivals in a weak maiden.
The return to this longer trip isn’t sure to suit him, but he has found another weak race and is taken to defy a penalty. Guchen, who was fifth in a Southwell bumper on his debut in May, could be the main danger starting out over hurdles for the in-form Kim Bailey.
14:05 – Grove Road
GROVE ROAD has reacted well to a change of headgear and has won both starts since a visor was fitted, winning with a bit more in hand than the bare margin would suggest on his return from a four-month break at Huntingdon last month.
He was always holding on despite idling, and he could yet do better for James Owen after only four starts for the yard. He’s gone up 7 lb for his latest win but remains well-treated on the pick of his form for his former yard.
14:35 – Torneo
TORNEO isn’t an obvious chasing type on looks and wasn’t fluent when third on his first start over fences at Uttoxeter in October. But he put in a more assured round of jumping when beaten only half a length in second at Wincanton last month.
The Wincanton handicap appeals as a fairly strong race for the grade, and Torneo could still have more to offer after that encouraging display. Beat Box won his first four starts for Dan Skelton and looks dangerous, having been freshened up since his disappointing effort at Hexham in October.
15:07 – Culligran
CULLIGRAN had made an encouraging start in handicaps and showed improved form to get off the mark over this course and distance on her return from a five-month break a couple of weeks ago.
That was a decisive seven-length success, and she is still relatively unexposed, so a 7 lb rise in the weights may not be enough to stop her following up.
15:37 – Doctor On Call
Paul Nicholls’ horses are in good order, and he has an interesting contender here in the shape of DOCTOR ON CALL, a half-brother to the smart chaser Martator. His dam was a listed winner over hurdles in France, so Doctor on Call makes appeal on paper.
Just Golden cost €120,000 as a three-year-old and is also in top hands with Dan Skelton, so he’s another notable newcomer.
