13.54 Newbury – Inthewaterside (each-way)
ITV Racing Saturday comes from Newbury and Newcastle starting here with a handicap hurdle over an extended 2m4f.
This is tough and wide open. INTHEWATERSIDE looked really promising early in his career when scoring at Sandown and Aintree and he’s not done too badly since, finishing third in a big field of handicappers up at Aintree in April behind Kateira.
He’s gone up 3lb for that defeat but I suspect this is a horse who still has more to come. An each-way selection for Paul Nicholls and Harry Cobden.
14.10 Newcastle – Colonel Mustard (each-way)
ITV go to Newcastle for two races including this Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle over 2m. Sir Gino and Mystical Power could both win this with ease, but I’ll just pop in COLONEL MUSTARD as an each-way wager for Lorna Fowler and Adam Wedge.
On a mark of 146 there is no reason why the Colonel can’t hit the frame at huge odds, and he will be spot-on after two placed runs at Sligo and Ascot. The third behind Lucky Place was, I believe, a fine effort, and he’s just a massive price in a race where it only takes one of the market leaders to disappoint, and there is a place angle. Have a few quid on each-way.
14.25 Newbury – Queens Gamble
A handicap hurdle – once the Gerry Feilden – over an extended 2m. Decent contest. The ground might not be soft enough for Salver, while Jeriko du Reponet has pulled up on his last two starts but has backclass.
The mare QUEENS GAMBLE was unbeaten last season, scoring at Kempton and Taunton, and she might still have more to give. She stays well, and a mark of 130 is fair enough after her Listed success. Goes for Jonny Burke and Harry Derham. Once looked very good for Oliver Sherwood.
15.00 Newbury – Broadway Boy
The big betting race of the day in the race everyone knows as the Hennessy Handicap Chase over 3m2f. No one thinks this is a vintage renewal but it’s still going to take some finding the winner.
I’m happy to side with BROADWAY BOY, who is a very strong stayer and has been dropped 1lb in the handicap for his third at Cheltenham the other day behind Senior Chief, who, of course, re-opposes.
My selection is much better off the weights with his old rivals and should get a positive ride from Sam Twiston-Davies for his old man Nigel. He could be hard to catch if getting into a decent rhythm.
15.20 Newcastle – Anglers Crag (each-way)
The Rehearsal Handicap Chase over nearly 3m. ANGLERS CRAG pulled up when last seen in the Scottish National but if he’s ready here he might be over priced for Brian Ellison and Craig Nichol. My selection went from a mark of 106 to 134 last season and that is what he’s on here so he has to bounce right back to his best. But I’ll chance he’s fit as an each-way hope.
15.35 Newbury – Imperial Saint
A handicap chase over an extended 2m. Petit Tonnerre is chucked in on his best form but we wait for that magical revival.
I’m happy to stick with hat-trick-seeking IMPERIAL SAINT, who runs for the master trainer Phillip Hobbs and who has gone up 10lb for a success at Aintree last time. It’s a big hike, but he’s in form and going well, and at this stage of the season, that might be enough.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
