13:55 Newbury – The Jukebox Man
ITV Racing is back Friday from Newbury starting here with a Grade 2 novices’ chase over 2m4f. Excited by this. Johnnywho might need further so it’s between THE JUKEBOX MAN and Captain Teague for me and both effectively make their seasonal debut and chasing debut. Point winner The Jukebox Man will be very hard to catch under Ben Jones if he’s in the form of either of his second to Stellar Story at Cheltenham or Dancing City at Aintree. He’s really good and hopefully scoots in for Ben Pauling.
14:30 Newbury – Heltenham
Here’s a handicap chase over 2m4f. This is pretty open on paper. HELTENHAM starts this season high in the handicap off 142 but he’s a talented horse and should go well for Harry and Dan Skelton. He scored here twice last season over course and distance off 130 and 136 and was going well off this mark when falling heavily at Ayr in April. It suggests it’s not impossible he can land this prize as long as the tumble has not left its mark. Some juice in the ground would be useful but there is not much rain about.
15:05 Newbury – Strong Leader
Another Grade 2 in the Long Distance Hurdle over 3m. Just four go to post and it looks easy for STRONG LEADER for Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen. That sounds odd as he’s not clear on ratings, indeed he has 4lb to find with Langer Dan at these weights. However, I expect this Flat track to suit and the Aintree winner might well have more to come. Added to which, we know Longer Dan likes to finish off a strong gallop and this trip might stretch his stamina.
15:40 Newbury – Chantry House (each-way)
A handicap hurdle over 3m. This time last year CHANTRY HOUSE was third in a handicap at Cheltenham off a mark of 147 but he gets in here on 139. Obviously the old boy is 10 now and he’s not going to be getting any better, but he has been given a chance and I’m happy to wish him each-way for Nico de Boinville and Nicky Henderson. Has cheekpieces on and wasn’t disgraced when last seen at Punchestown although that was 211 days ago.
So best of luck, and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
