12:25 – Kloth Of Utopia
KLOTH OF UTOPIA was impressive in winning by 12 lengths at Auteuil last month and can make a successful foray across the Channel with the longer trip expected to be in his favour. Nicky Henderson’s course chase winner Excello had some useful form over hurdles in France at the start of his career and is second choice ahead of Western Knight.
12:55 – Queens Venture
QUEENS VENTURE perhaps found a busy spell catching up with her at Wetherby last time, but she looked the handicapper to follow when winning her previous two starts, and is well worth another chance to prove herself on a good mark having been freshened up a little since. Midnightreflection should be sharper for her recent run, and isn’t one to write off from a slipping mark, with Batwomen and Scarlet O’Tara others to consider in an open race.
13:30 – Pic D’Orhy
PIC D’ORHY is a top-class chaser at his best and also boasts an excellent record at this course and distance. He was an easy winner of this contest 12 months ago and also won the Grade 1 Ascot Chase here in February. He wasn’t on his game when pulled up in the Melling Chase on his final start, but he’s much better than that, has a very good record when fresh, and stands out on form in this field. Dashel Drasher is capable of making a race of it in receipt of 6 lb if ready to go.
14:05 – Slipway
SLIPWAY is a strong stayer who dispelled a couple of low-key efforts in resuming winning ways over three miles at Kempton in March, but was well held in the Bet365 Gold Cup on a final start last season. He wasn’t disgraced on his cross-country debut, when fifth on last week’s reappearance at Cheltenham, and should find this test more suitable now. He’s potentially well treated, so is preferred to Beauport, whose record when fresh is pretty encouraging, with Fortescue likely to be on the premises again.
14:45 – Blueking d’Oroux
None of these can be ruled out with any confidence, but BLUEKING D’OROUX holds the edge on form, even under his penalty, so this relatively unexposed five-year-old is fancied to repeat his success in this event from 12 months ago. Jeremy Scott’s mare Golden Ace remains unbeaten in this sphere, and rates as a big threat, while Irish challenger Colonel Mustard and Nicky Henderson’s progressive Lucky Place are in the picture in this cracking Grade 2 contest.
15:20 – Martator
MARTATOR really found his feet towards the end of last season, winning his last three starts in handicaps, including one over this course and distance, and he confirmed himself as a progressive chaser when completing a four-timer on return in a competitive event again over this C&D three weeks ago. The handicapper has raised him another 6lb, but he is thriving at present, and again looks the one to beat. Sans Bruit, who is an excellent jumper, has a big performance in him, while Marvel de Cerisy is a fascinating contender.
15:50 – Best Life
BEST LIFE improved steadily in a handful of hurdle outings as a novice, posting his best effort yet when runner-up on handicap debut at Haydock in Spring. Appealing as a type to progress further in winter, he’s given the nod to go one better on return. Copshill Lad and Spring Gale are others to consider, while market confidence in Rubies or Gold, upped in trip/equipped with cheekpieces looks significant.
