12:20 First Confessions
FIRST CONFESSION, a £140,000 purchase after winning his only start in an Irish point, made a highly promising start under Rules when third behind Potters Charm, an impressive subsequent winner, in a novice hurdle at Cheltenham last month.
He has plenty about him physically and is open to significant improvement, as denoted by the Timeform ‘Large P’ attached to his rating, so he is taken to get off the mark.
12:55 Gidleigh Park
GIDLEIGH PARK was disappointing when only sixth in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival but he pulled too hard to see out the trip on his first start at three miles. It’s worth noting he was sent off at only 9/2 for that event, however, after creating an excellent impression when winning his first three starts over hurdles, including a Grade 2 at Cheltenham on Trials Day.
He remains an exciting prospect and, as a tall sort from the family of Denman, appeals as the type to take to chasing. He could outclass these rivals off a BHA mark of 138.
13:30 Joyeuse
JOYEUSE, out of a half-sister to Champion Hurdle winner Epatante, won a French bumper for Armand Lefeuvre in October 2022 and she looked like a nice prospect when making a successful start over hurdles for Nicky Henderson at Taunton in January.
Joyeuse jumped fluently and quickened up well to pick up her main rival without coming under maximum pressure. She remains with plenty of untapped potential and is starting out in a race her trainer has won for the last three years.
14:05 Gemirande
GEMIRANDE was disappointing when last seen at Cheltenham in April, but he has been dropped 3 lb since then, so he returns here only 2 lb above his last winning mark. Trainer Venetia Williams has won this twice in recent years with horses returning from a break and, with fitness unlikely to be an issue, Gemirande can take advantage of his lenient mark.
14:40 Aurigny Mill
AURIGNY MILL did well for Victor Dartnall last season, winning back-to-back handicaps at Wincanton and Kempton, but he showed even better form when making a winning start for Robert Walford on his return at Newbury a couple of weeks ago.
Aurigny Mill, who travelled powerfully under a patient ride, still had plenty to do turning for home but he made rapid headway and then did well to sustain the burst to draw ten lengths clear. That was a very impressive display and a 7lb rise may not be enough to stop him following up.
15:15 Law of Supply
Law of Supply showed only modest form in three starts over hurdles last season but this winning pointer produced a much-improved effort to make a successful chasing debut on his reappearance at Worcester last month.
Law of Supply, who’d had a breathing operation since last seen, largely jumped well and drew clear on the run-in before being heavily eased, proving value for more than double the margin of three and a half lengths. He is open to further improvement over fences and can defy a 10 lb hike.
15:50 Blues Singer
BLUES SINGER overcame inexperience to make a winning bumper debut at Kempton in March, and he’s entitled to improve for that experience.
Blues Singer was still only tenth and last of those in contention entering the straight, but he made rapid headway to lead a furlong out and, despite running green, he drew four and a half lengths clear. That victory means he’s saddled with a penalty on his return but he could prove up to the task.
