12:45 – Imperial Jade
IMPERIAL JADE opened her account in a juvenile hurdle at Chepstow in April 2023 and, though she didn’t progress as expected in handicaps last season, her mark reflects that and she shaped well on her return back at Chepstow last month. That was her first start since undergoing a breathing operation, and she was only headed off on the run-in after meeting the last wrong, and she is worth a chance to build on that moving back up in trip. Catboy and Sassified rate the principal dangers.
13:15 – Celtic Ned
CELTIC NED showed fair form over hurdles last season without winning and he shaped well on his return from eight months off on a chase debut at Fontwell last month, leaving the impression he was in need of the run. He’s entitled to strip fitter for that outing and, given he has the physique and pedigree for fences, he’s one to look out for in a weak handicap. I Shut That Door did everything right for once, when winning well from the front at Plumpton, and can go well again if in the same mood up 3 lb.
13:45 – Ambion View
AMBION VIEW achieved just modest form in three starts in bumpers last season, but proved a different proposition sent hurdling after eight months off, when opening his account in a maiden at Exeter last month. He attracted support at big odds, too, and rallied well to outpoint a next-time-out winner, with the pair pulling clear of the remainder. He has been found another good opportunity and is expected to defy a penalty moving up in trip. Tinklers Hill has been off the track over a year, but he represents a leading yard, so he’s sure to be well prepared for this and is the obvious danger.
14:15 – Sunset Marquesa
SUNSET MARQUESA was an above-average type in bumpers and finished a clear second despite her hurdling lacking fluency on debut, so sets a good standard without considering potential improvement. Kissinthebackrow arrives on the back of a Flat win at Kempton, and is expected to do better second time up over hurdles, while Loud And Proud rates as an interesting Rules newcomer for Harry Derham.
14:50 – Irish Hill
IRISH HILL went without a win last season, but he quickly left his below-par reappearance behind him, when taking advantage of a reduced mark at Plumpton this month. He appeared to be perked up by a change of headgear (first-time cheekpieces), and a drop in class, displaying a good attitude in the closing stages. A subsequent 3 lb rise leaves him well handicapped on the pick of his form and this is another winnable race. Getalead will find this less demanding than last week’s Cheltenham assignment and better can be expected.
15:23 – Famoso
A few are in with chances, but the suggestion is FAMOSO, who made a winning return to fences at Hereford this month and Matt Sheppard’s eight-year-old is fancied to defy a 5 lb higher mark at the expense of First Angel, who made it two wins from four starts for this yard (both at Stratford) when last seen back in summer 2023. Torneo should improve on his initial effort over fences and is another to consider.
15:58 – American Lad
Joe Tizzard is in excellent form at the moment and AMERICAN LAND is taken to build on his recent victory back over hurdles at Taunton. He wasn’t always professional, going in snatches, but was in control when jumping the last, and kept on well on the run-in, his jockey able to ease him at the finish. He avoids a penalty or a rise in the weights for that success, and that makes him hard to ignore from a handicapping perspective. Dirty Den and Penna Rossa are feared most.
