12:45 – Piper Park
PIPER PARK fetched a tidy sum after her point win and offered a fair bit in a Wetherby bumper in February.
She returns for her hurdles debut in a pretty thin contest and, a likely type to improve now sent jumping, she is worth siding with over HMS President, who is presumably pretty fragile and didn’t get the job done back from a similar absence first time up over timber in a weak race at Plumpton. Most Wanted completes the shortlist.
13:15 – Montecam
Those with experience over fences don’t set an exacting standard, so this looks cherry-ripe for a debutant, and the pick is the Nicky Henderson-trained MONTECAM.
He had fair form in bumpers and over hurdles, opening his account in a maiden hurdle at Hexham last season, and being a half-brother to dual Champion Chase winner Altior, he is a fascinating contender now switched to fences on what will also be his handicap debut.
Muskoka and Mighty Moth, who are also having their first go in this discipline, are feared most.
13:45 – Califet En Vol
The three hurdling newcomers could have this between them, with CALIFET EN VOL taken to give his yard another win in this novice.
He shaped well in an Ayr bumper in April, and Nicky Henderson has won two of the last three renewals of this race, so Califet En Vol looks an intriguing contender in this year’s edition, sure to relish this step up in trip and just the sort to take well to jumping. As Legends Have It is preferred over Montana Golden for the forecast.
14:15 – Jackpot D’Athou
JACKPOT D’ATHOU made a bright start over hurdles last season, winning two of his four starts, and though he fluffed his lines on his handicap debut when last seen at Ayr in April, that run was too bad to be true, and he remains with potential on his return to action.
Paul Nicholls is just starting to hit top form, and there should be more to come from this lightly-raced five-year-old who has undergone a breathing operation.
Last year’s victor, Dargiannini, could emerge as the main threat ahead of Pyramid Place.
14:50 – Sacre Coeur
This is wide open, but Dan Skelton’s SACRE COEUR rates the pick of the weights under a 7 lb penalty for her Plumpton victory last week.
She was fortunate to win on that occasion but looked back to her very best, and there is a strong chance she will get an uncontested lead.
She may be hard to peg back down in trip, so she edges the vote from last year’s heroine, Mulberry Hill.
Chasing-debutante Finest View comes here in fine form from hurdling and warrants lots of respect, along with Holly and Ilovethenightlife.
15:25 – Magical Arthur
The pair at the top of the weights may dominate this, with MAGICAL ARTHUR narrowly preferred to Charlie Longsdon’s The Dark Edge.
Magical Arthur has shown improved form since being fitted with cheekpieces and still managed to go close at Ayr last time despite some jumping lapses and the steady pace against him.
A visor now goes on, and he will surely launch another bold bid.
Honey Jack is next on the list and rates a possible handicap improver for the in-form Joe Tizzard stable.
16:00 – Sanitiser
This looks like a trappy handicap hurdle to finish the card, but preference is for SANITISER, who finished placed yet again and returned to this sphere at Fontwell in September.
He was given a lot to do on that occasion, too, but he finished his race well, suggesting he’s up to winning races from this mark.
Perhaps this is the day he’ll get his head in front, with Ezmerellda and Ikigai Star feared most.
