12:30 – Junkanoo
JUNKANOO made a promising start over hurdles last season, finishing runner-up to some useful types on his first three starts, before completing a simple task to open his account at Plumpton. He shaped well on his return to this sphere in September and he ran creditably over just short of two and a half miles last time. The return to two miles is in his favour and he’s potentially well handicapped on some of last season’s form. King William Rufus seems likely to go well again back in handicap company.
13:05 – Pure Carbon
It’s probably fair to say PURE CARBON was flattered by his proximity to the winner when runner-up on hurdles debut at Warwick, but the horse that beat him that day looks pretty useful and, in any case, it was a very promising start to his career in this sphere. Harry Derham’s charge is taken to go one better here, perhaps at the expense of L’Astronome, who is an interesting recruit from the Flat for the burgeoning James Owen yard. Bumper-winner Roysse is also of strong interest in what looks to be a race to keep an eye on.
13:40 – Destroytheevidence
DESTROYTHEEVIDENCE was well prepared and justified good support after eight months off when successful on his chase debut at Chepstow four weeks ago. There should be more to come from him here and he’s fancied to launch a bold bid to make it two from two. Collectors Item, who responded well to blinkers when scoring at Uttoxeter in May, is another to note on return, whilst it will be intriguing to see how Hugos New Horse figures now sent chasing.
14:17 – Listentoyourheart
Having built up a solid record in bumpers last season, LISTENTOYOURHEART made a seamless transition to hurdles by impressively landing an eight-runner novice at Market Rasen six weeks ago. She’s an exciting prospect in this division, especially as she reached a high level in bumpers and, open to significant improvement, she should have no problem following up. Exeter scorer Roaring Home appeals as the one to give Dan Skelton’s mare most to think about.
14:52 – Major Fortune
This is by far the strongest race MAJOR FOTUNE has contested, but he was most progressive last season, and judging by the style of his winning return at Newton Abbot recently, it doesn’t look like his improvement is stopping anytime soon. He’s expected to follow up under a 7 lb penalty, likely at the main expense of Emitom, who goes very well at this track and is second choice.
15:27 – Thelasthighking
THELASTHIGHKING failed to kick on from a positive start to last season, but he’s on a good mark if able to get back on track, a scenario which is certainly plausible given he returns from a break with his yard going great guns. He’s worth chancing, with I’d Like To Know, who took very well to fences last season, a much-respected main danger. Twinjets remains capable of better, and Masaccio is a threat, if he adapts well to the larger obstacles.
16:02 – Brookside La
The Skelton yard have been firing with bumper runners, so BROOKSIDE LA could be the way. He cost €100,000 as a three-year-old and makes plenty of appeal on paper. This looks a pretty deep contest though, one which Nicky Henderson usually targets successfully, so Bobajob has to be respected. Wandering Ego is another to note.
