Bravemansgame will need to beat five rivals if he’s to regain the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on Saturday.
Paul Nicholls’ stable star could only finish second when defending the title last year and it marked the beginning of a winless campaign.
A crucial factor in Bravemansgame’s favour could be the fact he receives weight from French Dynamite, who has race fitness on his side after scooping Grade 3 honours last month.
Conflated is the highest-rated horse in the field but Gordon Elliott’s runner is winless since December 2022.
The Real Whacker is bidding to bounce back from a sequence of disappointing outings, Summer Cup scorer Hang In There is given a go due to the good ground and veteran Sam Brown completes the line up for Saturday’s 14:58.

Charlie Hall Chase 2024 verdict
Timeform: BRAVEMANSGAME took this event in 2022 and although he didn’t hit the same heights last term he has a good record fresh and looks the one to beat on the back of breathing surgery. Irish challenger Conflated is on a lengthy losing sequence but also has the form to have a say.

Charlie Hall Chase 2024 runners and riders
The following horses have been declared for the Charlie Hall Chase 2024.
French Dynamite
Trainer: M. F. Morris Jockey: Sean Flanagan Age: 9 Weight: 11st 8lbs
Smart Irish chaser who ended a lengthy losing run in Grade 3 chase at Punchestown (23.2f) 17 days ago by 2¼ lengths from Minella Indo. This is a very difficult ask, however.
**
Grey Dawning
Trainer: Dan Skelton Jockey: Non Runner Age: 7 Weight: 11st 7lbs
Non Runner
Bravemansgame
Trainer: Paul Nicholls Jockey: Harry Cobden Age: 9 Weight: 11st 4lbs
Took this in 2022 but he went winless and didn’t operate at his best last term, tried in cheekpieces on his final run when only sixth of seven in Bowl Chase at Aintree. Returns after a wind op now and has a good record fresh so he can’t be discounted.
****
Conflated
Trainer: Gordon Elliott Jockey: Danny Gilligan Age: 10 Weight: 11st 4lbs
High-class Irish chaser but he unseated his rider at the first in Grade 3 chase at Punchestown (23.2f) 17 days ago. Winless since 2022 but he holds solid form claims.
****
Hang In There
Trainer: Emma Lavelle Jockey: Joe Anderson Age: 10 Weight: 11st 4lbs
Very smart chaser who scored at Uttoxeter in June and posted a good second of 6 in handicap chase at Worcester (23f) 66 days ago. This demands a clear personal best, though.
***
Sam Brown
Trainer: Anthony Honeyball Jockey: Rex Dingle Age: 12 Weight: 11st 4lbs
Smart veteran chaser who scored twice last season in 3m handicaps at Warwick and Ascot. Signed off with a creditable sixth of 20 in Bet365 at Sandown. Place possibilities, especially if the rains come.
***
The Real Whacker
Trainer: Patrick Neville Jockey: Brian Hughes Age: 8 Weight: 11st 4lbs
Winner of the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at the 2023 Cheltenham Festival. Came up short at the top level last season and unseated his rider at the 10th in Kerry National at Listowel on his return. No forlorn hope.
