Champion Stakes 2024 trends and stats for Ascot 3.55 on Saturday

Some clues on offer, here.

King Of Steel winning the Champion Stakes at Ascot in 2023

Economics is bidding to join the elite band of horses to win the Champion Stakes and Irish equivalent in the same season.

The likes of Magical (2019) and Almanzor (2016) have achieved the feat in recent years, but the William Haggas-trained colt will need to beat 11 rivals as the biggest field in nine years has been assembled for the feature race on British Champions Day at Ascot.

He is not the highest-rated horse in the line-up, however, as French raider Calandagan takes that honour after being reassessed at 125 following a 1l defeat to City Of Troy in the Juddmonte International.

Champion Stakes odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise key historical trends from the last 10 renewals and a tip based off the big-race stats are below.

Champion Stakes 2024 trends

AGE

  • 10/10 were aged three to six

French-trained Iresine is the first to fall by the wayside as the Prix Foy winner breaches the upper end of the trend at the age of seven.

FLAT FORM

  • 10/10 had at least six runs on the level

A bit of a shocker as Economics, one of the breakout stars of the season, can be scrubbed from calculations by virtue of the fact the Irish Champion Stakes winner has only had five career runs.

RATING

  • 10/10 were rated 117 or higher

Incredibly, for one of the biggest races on the middle-distance calendar in Britain, more than half the field are rated lower than 117 – Anmaat (116), Continuous (114), King’s Gambit (116), Novus (107), Persica (112), Royal Rhyme (116) and See The Fire (113).

SEASON FORM

  • 10/10 had at least three runs that season

Nashwa, the multiple Group 1 winner, has only been seen on track on two occasions in 2024 and they were both sub-par performances.

Champion Stakes 2024 trends verdict

Royal Ascot winner Calandagan and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe third Los Angeles emerge as the only two contenders to meet all the crucial trends, although it is worth noting that the latter was beaten by Economics in the Irish Champion Stakes last month.
