13:40 Sofia The First

The Andrew Balding-trained SOFIA THE FIRST has progressed with each start to date, opening her account at the third attempt in a seven-furlong maiden at Lingfield last month.

She still looked rough around the edges, but she proved strong at the finish, leaving the impression she’ll relish this step up to a mile now, and an opening mark of 72 shouldn’t be beyond her with further progress on the cards. Gap Year is next on the list on the back of his good Newmarket third ahead of Laplander and Many Men.

14:15 Starlit Spice

STARLIT SPICE was a 180,000 guineas purchase as a yearling and she shaped with plenty of encouragement on her debut when second to an exciting prospect at Leicester last month. She has a good middle-distance pedigree and very much caught the eye by the finish, making good late headway under considerate handling and pulling clear of the remainder.

This step up to a mile is sure to suit, and she’s open to significant improvement now. Pearl of Hope shaped well on debut also, and Bint Jeddah can improve again and play a part despite a penalty.

14:50 Zanzoun

ZANZOUN is bred to be smart, and she was also the pick on looks when making a nice debut in a newcomers’ event over seven furlongs at Newmarket in August. She looked in clear need of the experience, displaying signs of greenness when shaken up around two furlongs out but just unable to go with the impressive winner, who has since won a Group 3.

That form has a solid look to it and, with improvement almost certain, she is expected to go one place better. Jowddah has a similar level of form and should improve, too, while Godolphin’s Cardinal Point is likely to step forward from debut.

15:25 Melon Twist

MELON TWIST didn’t show much on her debut, but she has run to a fairly useful level on her last two starts, beaten only by a progressive odds-on favourite when last seen at Southwell last month. If you take the winner out, that may not have been the strongest race, but neither is this, and she has the ability to go one place better now for a yard who are in good form. Makes Sense and Raphael Freire’s new recruit Manhattan Mirage.

16:00 Bracklesham Bay

BRACKLESHAM BAY didn’t show much on his first three starts, but he was gelded afterward and has since won both of his starts in handicaps. The latest of those came over a mile at Bath last month, proving too strong for the same horse he had beaten at Chepstow 12 days earlier despite that rival having a pull in the weights.

Judged by that performance, he seems sure to stay this longer trip, so he’s expected to progress again and complete a hat-trick from an 8lb higher mark. Liberatus, who won at Hamilton recently, can pose the biggest threat.

16:35 Sarmiento Power

There are lots in with chances in this handicap, but Roger Varian’s SARMIENTO POWER looks a likely improver on the back of his encouraging handicap debut at Newcastle last time. He saw out the longer trip well that day, probably given a little bit too much to do, so he edges the vote back on turf and moving up even further in trip. In-form course winner Afloat heads the list of dangers, with the likes of Fram Castle, Mrs Meader, and Turner Girl also well in the mix.

17:10 Tribal Chief

With his yard going great guns, TRIBAL CHIEF is taken to complete a hat trick. He’s gone up a total of 12lb for his victories at Kempton and Epsom, but there’s good reason to believe that he may still harbour secrets from the handicapper, as judged by the manner of his latest success.

Provided he goes on the ground Never Better will be a serious threat given his potential, while recent Newmarket scorer Terries Royale and Urban Lion are others to consider.

17:45 Marching Mac

The vote goes to MARCHING MAC, who opened his account at the third time of asking for this yard at Brighton and lost little caste in defeat when chasing home a very well-treated rival dropped to five furlongs at Bath last week. He clearly handles cuts in the ground, and moving back up to six furlongs will be in his favour.

King of War was beaten by Flying Secret over seven furlongs at this course recently but is taken to reverse those placings back at this trip on 3lb better terms. He rates the main danger ahead of Kurimu.
