14:05 Newmarket – Brighton Boy

A very big prize for this Auction Stakes Race and Brighton Boy is interesting off a mark of 88. His best form has come on softer ground, winning on good-to-soft ground twice. Connections obviously feel he’s well handicapped and this doesn’t look the deepest of races.

14:25 Ascot – Al Qareem

In a rare ante-post bet from me I backed Al Qareem at the start of the week. He enjoys testing ground and has done very little wrong this year, and although beaten by Al Aasy in the Gregory Freer Stakes at Newbury on good to firm ground, he has a huge chance of reversing that form on this softer going. Hamish will also like the ground, but at eight-years-old now, he seems to be regressing. I’d like a decent price before I’d take a chance on him.

14:40 Newmarket – Tamfana (nap)

Tamfana was fourth in the 1,000 Guineas the start of the season and has done very little wrong since including when placed behind Sparkling Plenty in the French Oaks over 10f after that. They then stepped her up again to 12f for the Grand Prix De Paris and back down to 1m last time at Sandown and she won. It looked like they were fiddling with her trip in that Sandown contest having run over 10f & 12f this season. I didn’t like her dropping back to a mile at Sandown, but I’m willing to stick with her against some older mares  that don’t really capture my imagination anymore. I’d like to see her take a step forward again and hopefully she can do so. She’s my nap of the day.

15:00 Ascot – Jarraaf

Despite winning his last two starts, Jarraaf still looks very unexposed as he heads into an Autumn campaign in his three-year-old career.  Twice a winner over course and distance (rated 87 & 95) he finds himself running off a mark of 104 and is entitled to step up in grade now. The ground is a little bit of an unknown,  as both wins came on the all weather or the last twice on good and good-to-firm ground. His victory at the Shergar Cup looks very strong form, with the second Venture Capital, a next time out winner, while the third placed Thunder Blue, was only narrowly beaten next time. Aramram has won since too (and finished runner-up in the Ayr Gold Cup) while Bulldog Drummond has also won. If Jarraaf handles the ground he should go very close.

15:20 Redcar – Billboard Star

Busy two-year-old Billboard Star has been contesting Group 2 races all year, since winning his novice in June, and has been competitive in most of them. He was third last time behind Powerful Glory on heavy ground, and has a high knee action, so the going at Redcar shouldn’t pose a problem. He looks the one to beat off a decent low draw in stall seven.  We’ll have another bite of the cherry with Northern Ticker even though he has plenty to find on ratings. One for the each-way places as he’ll handle the ground.

15:35 Ascot – Popmaster

Ed Walker’s charge Popmaster was a neck second in this contest last year, off a mark of 106, but has yet to win this season.  He runs off 104 now and wasn’t disgraced in the Victoria Cup over course & distance, behind the Wizard of Eye, when only beaten two lengths into seventh. He’s been contesting Group contests since at big prices, but has dropped down the weights a bit, and here’s hoping he can go one place better this time.
