13:30 Bel Amigo
BEL AMIGO‘s French form marks him out as the pick at the weights in this novice hurdle so it’s worth assuming he will be fit enough after six months off to get the job done here on his first start for Nick Alexander. He joined his new stable after winning a claiming chase at Compiegne in March but he has fairly useful form over hurdles too. Irish raiders Jumping Susie, third at Bangor last month and Step Out, off the mark in a maiden at Downpatrick last time, are the obvious alternatives.
14:05 Shared
SHARED has won first time up for Harry Derham for the last two seasons and can repeat the feat here. He ran well in a stronger event at Warwick when last seen in May, finishing fourth to Uggy Uggy Uggy, and has untapped potential over this sort of trip. Famous Liss is potentially a big improver upped in trip for his handicap debut and is strongly respected on his return, while Faithfulflyer, who was a course-and-distance winner in May, should again go well here.
14:40 Yokkel
Most of these are making their debut over hurdles but John McConnell’s mare YOKKELL, who was fairly useful on the Flat, was a wide-margin winner at Down Royal on her first start over hurdles in August before pulling clear of the rest when second to Dodger Long at Warwick twelve days ago, making her very much the one to beat. Point recruits Another High Five and Lyle View, for the stables of Lucinda Russell and Neil Mulholland respectively, may emerge as the chief threats.
15:15 Do No Wrong
Justin Landy’s DO NO WRONG appeals as the most solid option, winning at Southwell in June and being placed in three of his four starts, including when third to Half Shot over a shorter trip at this course last month. Breaking The Ice won three times here in his younger days and, while less reliable of late, arrives in good heart after finishing third at Perth last time, while Captain Quint, now with Paul Robson, can go well fresh starting out for a new yard.
15:50 Traprain Law
TRAPRAIN LAW quickly developed into a useful chaser for Lucinda Russell last season, winning at Ayr as well as this track, and signing off with a fine second to Tommy’s Oscar back at Ayr on Scottish Grand National day. The six-year-old looks one to follow over fences this term and is taken to make a winning return with more still to offer over fences. He can reverse that Ayr form with last year’s winner Tommy’s Oscar, while Fringill Dike, yet to finish out of the first two in completed starts over fences, is also in the mix.
16:25 O’Grady’s Hill
Lots with chances in the first division of this conditional jockeys’ hurdle. Winning pointer O’GRADY’S HILL is fancied to build on previous promise now stepping into handicap company for the first time and gain a first win under Rules. The consistent Malangen, who has held his form well since winning at Hexham in June, could emerge as the main danger to Harry Derham’s mare, with the handily-weighted Rickety Gate and in-form maiden Nastasiya also in the picture.
17:00 Double Powerful
DOUBLE POWERFUL was improving fast when last seen, winning handicaps at Fakenham and Market Rasen in the spring and looking to have plenty in hand last time, and he comes back from six months off for the in-form stable of Neil Mulholland, so he’s preferred to Dalileo who ran with credit when second at Perth recently. Summergrounds won at Market Rasen in May and has posted a couple of creditable efforts since so is also likely to give a good account.
