13:30 – Sujet
Shackleton sets a decent standard but is opposed here by SUJET, who shaped nicely on debut in a strong Killarney maiden and should relish this stamina test. Place claims are held by the likes of Deetee and Ben Hur, while the most interesting of the newcomers look to be Medallion and Birdie Time.
14:05 – Aftermath
The Champagne Stakes in which AFTERMATH finished third in recently didn’t look the strongest renewal but nonetheless the Ballydoyle colt should be hard to beat back in maiden company here. Storm Piece looks the principal danger, while the most interesting of the newcomers look to be Malpeque, a half-sister to Snellen, and the selection’s stablemate Saints N Scholars.
14:40 – Heavens Gate
Quite an open look to this. After quite a busy season it is a bit surprising HEAVENS GATE is belatedly tried over this trip, she is certainly bred for it and could prove the answer. Barnavara holds the best piece of form on her C&D third in the Debutante and looks a big danger, while the selection’s stablemate Merrily had no luck in running at Goodwood and could well have more to offer at this trip. Fiery Lucy and Alla Stella are closely matched on recent form.
15:15 – Spycatcher
British-trained sprinters have tended to have the upper hand on this season’s Irish raids, and five of the last seven winners of this event have come from that source. With further easing in the ground possible, conditions should suit SPYCATCHER who went close to winning a Group 1 last year and was back in form at Deauville last month before running in the Haydock Sprint Cup. C&D premier handicap winner My Mate Alfie is progressive enough to feature. Others to consider are last year’s winner Go Athletico an the long-absent His Majesty.
15:50 – The Marty Party (NAP)
If none the worse for his fine effort in a rated race at Listowel, THE MARTY PARTY (nap) should be able to exploit this handicap opportunity. Moonhall Church, also a winner earlier in the week, may continue on the upgrade. Heishybrid has a good chance with his mark left unchanged after a maiden win. Native Honey and Dandy Khan make some appeal as possible improvers.
16:25 – Zanndabad
The 2m4f trip found out ZANNDABAD in the Ascot Stakes. His staying-on third behind Zoffee in the Chester Cup gives him good credentials for this massive pot. Joseph O’Brien fields a powerful team, with Galway Hurdle winner Nurburgring a prime contender after his recent Leopardstown fourth. Stablemate Dawn Rising, third here last year, could be involved too. A good case can be made for The Euphrates, who has kept smart company in the Classic generation. The penalised Newmarket winner Sixandahalf is another with a definite chance.
17:00 – Procrastinate
It may be worth taking a chance on the unexposed PROCRASTINATE who made a good first impression here in March and is likely to be fit and ready despite a lengthy absence. In an open little race, Snellen and Tokenomics are probable dangers.
17:30 – John Steinbeck
A maiden which may not take a lot of winning and JOHN STEINBECK won’t have to be anything out of the ordinary to make a belated winning debut, having initially missed an entry here on Derby weekend. Of those to have run, Dahab, Thequietman, Daboya and Royal Entry appear the most likely dangers.
