The last four runnings of the Cambridgeshire have thrown up huge-priced winners, which is hardly surprising when you consider the first leg of the Autumn Double regularly attracts one of the biggest fields of the season.
A maximum of 35 horses were declared for the 2024 renewal of the nine-furlong scrap and Liberty Lane – trained by Karl Burke – will attempt to follow in the hoofprints of last year’s winner, Astro King, by scoring off top weight.
There has not been a three-year-old winner since Lord North, who turned out to be pretty decent, scooted to glory in 2019 and eight horses in that age group will attempt to achieve the feat.
Cambridgeshire odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise key historical trends from the last 10 renewals and a tip based off the big-race stats are below.
Cambridgeshire 2024 trends
LAST TIME OUT
- 10/10 had their most recent run within the last 49 days
We have some early exits from proceedings in the form of Norwalk Havoc (60 days off track), Silver Sword (63 days off track) and Empirestateofmind (56 days off track).
DISTANCE WINS
- 9/10 had at least one win over eight or nine furlongs
The leading antepost fancy, This Songisforyou, is one of six runners that can be scratched from proceedings having failed to get on the scoreboard over 1m or 1m1f.
RATING
- 9/10 were rated 94 or higher
Incredibly, nearly half of the field are short on official ratings and 2022 Cambridgeshire winner Majestic is among those to fall by the wayside.
SEASON RUNS
- 9/10 had between three to eight runs that season
Lion Of War has only been seen on one occasion in 2024 and that came a fortnight ago when making his first appearance in more than a year.
DRAW
- 8/10 were drawn in stall 21 or higher
A high draw appears to be favoured in the Cambridgeshire and some key runners including top weight Liberty Lane (stall four) and Golden Mile winner Toimy Son (stall 11) can be scratched.
AGE
- 7/10 were aged four to six
Roi De France – the mount of Oisin Murphy – and Under Siege will need to defy recent runnings if they are to win as three-year-olds.
SEASON FORM
- 7/10 had at least one win that season
Dermot Weld has booked Ryan Moore to ride Coeur d’Or but the eight-year-old gelding has failed to get on the scoresheet this term despite a number of placed performances including a fourth in the Irish Cambridgeshire last time out.
COURSE FORM
- 6/10 had at least one previous run at Newmarket
Godwinson, Mr King and Ron O are making their first appearances at HQ and recent history suggests victory on their Newmarket debut is unlikely.
Cambridgeshire 2024 trends verdict
Incredibly, a total of six horses – Roi De France/Godwinson/Dual Identity/Mr King/Under Siege/Ron O – meet the trends achieved by eight of the past 10 winners of the Cambridgeshire so it looks like a tricky puzzle to solve.
We have to look further down the list to previous Newmarket experience for a pick to emerge and it comes in the form of DUAL IDENTITY, who placed third in the race two years ago and is now racing off a career-high mark of 100.
