14:50 Plumpton – Invictus De Brion

‌Strange things can happen to moderate flat performers when they have eight flights of hurdles put in front of them, and the same can be said when timber toppers take on the challenge of jumping a fence.

‌Rated as high as 91 over hurdles, INVICTUS DE BRION was off the track for 436 days before finally returning to action in June of this year. Two runs showed how ring rusty he was with midfield displays, after which connections decided to switch to the larger obstacles.

‌Understandably a bit scratchy early on, Rex Dingle gave the six-year-old a lovely educational ride, and as such, his jumping gradually became slicker. It was clear his chance of catching Belgarum was none nonexistent, fully half a mile out, and under the minimum pressure from his partner, he kept on nicely under a sympathetic ride to finish a never nearer 17 lengths third.

With that run under his belt and 8lbs better off at the weights with the winner, I shall be surprised if this lightly raced six-year-old isn’t involved at the business end here.

15:00 Listowel – Vischio‌

A big field of mares are set to line up for this extended two and a quarter mile handicap hurdle and it took me a long time to whittle down my short list to just three entries.

I think that One Night Standard can be forgiven her last run at Killarney when she was not travelling at any stage following a previous runaway win in a Wexford maiden. Rated as high as 95 on the flat, top weight Dame Rapide has yet to translate that kind of talent over timber but has shown on her last two starts that her turn is at hand.

‌However, both may have to give best to the daughter of Holy Roman Emperor, VISCHIO‌. Listed runs on the level have just been a shade too hard for her of late although she was far from disgraced in the Vintage Tipples Stakes in May. Danny Mullins takes over from Conor Stone-Walsh following a one paced effort at Galway and that could well be the tipping point here.

Epidavros looks sure to start among the market leaders here following a smooth as silk success at Carlisle on soft ground last time out. Always on the heels of the leaders, the filly went about her business in good style when asked to quicken by PJ McDonald and off just a 4lbs higher mark simply has to enter calculations.

The filly could push the veteran selection all the way, but a differential of 12lbs may be too hot to handle for the lightly raced three-year-old. Set to run in his 55th career start I have always thought that a mile and a half just stretches the old boy and that theory was once again proven when he ran at Musselburgh Last month.

Running all over his rivals down the home stretch for the final time, the seven-year-old looked poised to strike between the two and the one pole, but emptied out badly at the distance. This drop back to an extended nine furlongs on a much stiffer track looks a much better fit and TILSITT‌ can reward each-way players with the competent Rhys Elliott claiming 7lbs off his back.

16:42 Hamilton – Bay Breeze‌

This looks just about the most competitive race of the day on either side of the Irish Sea, with several nicely treated sprinters set to line up in a field of 10.

I first considered top weight Hierarchy, who has been running in some fair class four events over the past three months and showed that his turn was just around the corner when staying on nicely behind Bishop’s Crown at Salisbury. The son of Mehmas could well be the biggest danger to the selection off a career-low mark of 74 with the red-hot Saffie Osborne riding out of her skin.

‌In fact, I may well have a saver on the top weight, but in receipt of 4lbs the Tim Easterby charge, BAY BREEZE‌, may just be the value call here.

The selection ran a cracker behind Dicko The Legend at York two outings back, just backing out inside the final 75 yards, and his last run can be safely forgotten as he nearly unshipped David Allan coming out of the stalls at Ripon.
