13:30 Newbury – Albasheer

ALBASHEER is an old favourite of mine and this 5f trip should suit. He was beaten by only less than half a length last time when fourth at Doncaster, having been chinned in the Beverly Bullet before that. He likes to come late and fast.

11/2
Albasheer Win or Each Way

13:50 Ayr – Phantom Flight

I’ve no major conviction on this, but PHANTOM FLIGHT has a leading chance. The form of his York second to See The Fire is working out well. He might have a few lbs to find with Enfjaar and Sir Busker, but he is sure to run his race.

11/4
Phantom Flight Win or Each Way

14:05 Newbury – Ithaca’s Arrow

A 1m5f handicap with the veteran Not So Sleepy among the field. ITHACA’S ARROW is a little under the radar and has found his form this season as a four-year-old. He won well last week at Chester and can win more races on the Flat before an Autumn hurdling campaign. The trip is ideal and he is versatile ground-wise. I’ll make him my nap of the day.

11/1
Ithacas Arrow Win or Each Way

14:25 Ayr – Rock Opera

The consolation race for those who didn’t get into the Ayr Gold Cup and ROCK OPERA should be a nice price – but he comes with risks. He took the eye at York in July and continued to run with merit despite a succession of bad draws. His run at Ripon was disappointing and he probably didn’t handle the track. An each-way chance as he can be hot and cold. A low draw in stall four and a favourable mark can hopefully bring out the best in him.

16/1
Rock Opera Win or Each Way

14:40 Newbury – Flying Frontier

A 10f contest where FLYING FRONTIER has had an interrupted campaign but is back on trial now. He missed the John Smith’s Cup at York, ran poorly at Yarmouth, and then won well at Sandown. He looks to have more improvement and can win from stall two.

7/2
Flying Frontier Win or Each Way

15:00 Ayr – Perfect Part (each-way)

This Group 3 6f Fillies’ contest has 13 declared, including Irish challengers Town and Country and Grande Marques. The market will likely revolve around Sky Majesty – especially if owner Tony Bloom gets involved. Market support for the one-run, one-win filly will be significant. PERFECT PART could be an outsider with a chance on her fifth start. She won on debut at 125/1 at Beverley over 5f but hasn’t hit those heights since. Her last run in the Lowther at York was a creditable fifth of nine and could be better than given credit for—an each-way play.

14/1
Perfect Part Win or Each Way

15:15 Newbury – Star Anthem (each-way)

We haven’t seen STAR ANTHEM since the Coventry Stakes and he reappears now in this Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes at what looks like a crazy price in the early markets. Trainer Clive Cox has won this before and this could be a target rather than an afterthought. Shadow Of Light looks like the one to beat on his Gimcrack Stakes running, but it’s up for grabs after that. Charlie Appleby has had 10 Group 1, 2, and 3 contest winners this season.

33/1
Star Anthem Win or Each Way

15:35 Ayr – Orazio / Pilgrim

The feature race on the card is the Ayr Gold Cup, and I’ll go for one on each side of the draw. I might go for a couple of win-only chances in forecasts, as most pace runners are drawn high. ORAZIO in stall three appeals as one who could go well back over 6f as this is his trip, not 7f. Billy Loughnane is booked for Charlie Hills, and he can go well.

The three-year-old PILGRIM was progressive earlier in the season and is drawn in stall 25. He won well at Royal Ascot over 5f before disappointing at York. He could get a nice set-up with the pace runners around him. Trainer David Barron has had plenty of top-class sprinters to know what’s what.

16/1
Orazio Win or Each Way

14/1
Pilgrim Win or Each Way
