13.30 Newbury – Relief Rally (each-way)
ITV Racing go to Ayr and Newbury Saturday starting here with a Group 3 over 5f. This is pretty open like so many sprints this term. Annaf is the clear form pick but ran terribly when last seen. With a bit of juice in the ground the one for me each-way is RELIEF RALLY who has good form at this track.
The filly was seen by some as ‘just a juvenile’ but returned this season with a fine fourth in the Fred Darling when not staying and was then second to Elite Status in the Carnarvon. She really should be in the frame at the very least. Tom Marquand rides for William Haggas.
13.50 Ayr – Enfjaar
Ayr gets underway with a listed event of over 1m2f. A decent renewal. There is no obvious reason why ENFJAAR will reverse recent York form with Phantom Flight as both will enjoy this slightly longer trip. That said, Enfjaar is 3lb better off, and I suspect he didn’t run to his best that day. His previous second at Goodwood suggested a fast-improving horse. Runs for Roger Varian and Jim Crowley.
14.05 Newbury – Waxing Gibbous
Here’s a handicap over an extended 1m5f. It’s hard to believe WAXING GIBBOUS did not win at Haydock last time so powerfully did he travel into the race and down a furlong in trip and held on to a bit longer I think he can overcome a rise of 5lb for David Menuisier.
This is a fast improving stayer who has also been a good second at Doncaster and Kempton this term as well as scoring at this track which might be key. Harry Davies rides.
14.25 Ayr – Summerghand (each-way)
The Silver Cup Handicap over 6f which gets us ready for the Ayr Gold Cup. Alfa Kellenic keeps on winning and could easily do so again. However, old boy SUMMERGHAND was a real eye-catcher at the Curragh the other day and he’s the each-way selection for Danny Tudhope and David O’Meara.
The 10-year-old put in some fantastic last work to be sixth in Ireland and races here off 89, having won the Gold Cup off 102 in 2022. It’s worth noting he did finish last in this twelve months ago. But hey, it’s just a statistic.
14.40 Newbury – Laafi (each-way)
Another handicap this time over 1m2f. Some very much in-form horses in this. LAAFI is not one of them, and hence, he’ll be a big price. However, if rain comes, he might have conditions to suit for a very much in form William Haggas and Tom Marquand.
My each-way selection was impressive last season in the mud at Newmarket and went up from 92 to 98 for that success, but is down to 95 here, so handicapped to compete. The trip is fine.
15.00 Ayr – Royalty Boy (each-way)
Here’s a Group 3 for youngsters juvenile fillies over 6f. Not a race that I’ve got much time for – they all look below this grade. Sky Majesty looked good on debut, however, while I like ROYALTY BOY as he’s coming back in trip.
I think he’s got a fair each-way chance on his second in Deauville and he didn’t seem to stay at Goodwood over 7f last time. Jason Hart takes the ride for John and Sean Quinn.
15.15 Newbury – Shadow Of Light
Up in class now for the Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes for juveniles over 6f. SHADOW OF LIGHT was probably on the wrong part of the track and had plenty to do when staying on into second behind Cool Hoof Luke in the Gimcrack with Symbol Of Strength just behind and rallying. I suspect the Godolphin runner is better than that form suggests and he has every chance here for William Buick and Charlie Appleby.
15.35 Ayr – Rohaan
Now the big betting race of the day run the Ayr Gold Cup Handicap over 6f. Is this the day for ROHAAN to bounce back to his best? All season, there have been glimmers of hope, but last time, the Dave Evans runner gave a real warning. He was on the way back when third at Ascot, and he hadn’t been disgraced at Goodwood the time before.
My selection was seventh in this last year off 104, and he’s down to 96 now. It’s a big chance to come last and fast under Tom Queally.
