13:25 Haazeez
This doesn’t look like a strong maiden by Newbury standards, so could be a good opportunity for HAAZEEZ to belatedly build on the promise of his debut effort over this course and distance in May.
Haazeez caught the eye, making good headway into fifth, shaping with considerable promise, but he failed to build on that when runner-up at Ayr and only sixth at Yarmouth. It’s still early days, though, and he looks worth another chance.
13:55 I Maximus
I MAXIMUS is clearly well regarded as he’s been sent off a short-price favourite on both starts. He’s not been able to reward that support but he has shaped well to finish placed on both occasions, finishing well clear of the rest when runner-up at Kempton last time.
He’s a well-made colt with plenty about him physically and remains open to improvement.
14:25 Cathedral
CATHEDRAL and Anna Swan both created an excellent impression on debut and earned the Timeform Large P to highlight that they are open to significant improvement.
Narrow preference is for Cathedral who represents the in-form Ralph Beckett yard and seemed to really be getting the hang of things when motoring clear at Lingfield. She proved a class apart from her rivals on that occasion and marked herself out as an exciting prospect.
14:55 Lakers
LAKERS shaped with plenty of encouragement when third at Yarmouth on debut, and he confirmed that promise when knuckling down well to get off the mark at Ffos Las.
He found one too strong at Beverley last time but he gave a good account of himself under a penalty and was well clear of the third. He heads into handicaps from a fair-looking opening mark, and there’s the potential of more to come.
15:30 Regal Ulixes
This is often an informative event and there are some promising sorts among this season’s contenders, including Regal Ulixes who shaped well when third at Goodwood on debut.
REGAL ULIXES boasts a fine pedigree, he’s by Ulysses out of Group 3 winner Regal Realm, and he showed plenty to work with on debut at Goodwood where he made late headway after finding himself short of room. The majority of Andrew Balding’s two-year-olds progress well for the initial experience and Regal Ulixes can take a big step forward.
16:05 Lake Forest
LAKE FOREST won the Gimcrack last season and has shown even better form in defeat this season, posting smart efforts when runner-up in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot and the Hackwood Stakes at this venue.
Lake Forest was beaten only half a length in the Hackwood after doing some good work in the closing stages, and he looks likely to appreciate the step up to seven furlongs. He still retains the Timeform ‘small p’ to denote he’s likely capable of better.
16:40 Blessed Honour
BLESSED HONOUR has progressed well and showed a good attitude to get off the mark at Nottingham last time, digging deep to get the better of a previous winner.
Her strength at the finish there suggested a step back up in trip to a mile and a half would be in her favour, so this looks like a suitable test on her return from nearly three months off. She starts out in handicaps from a fair-looking mark and should have more to offer.
17:15 Mustazeed
MUSTAZEED won twice over this course and distance last season and is only 3lb higher than the second of those wins.
A tendency to break slowly has hampered him on occasions, including last time when he completely blew the start, but his previous second at Ascot shows that he’s still on a decent mark and capable of making his presence felt when putting it all together.
