13:50 – Strike Red
This is a fiercely competitive handicap but STRIKE RED went close in a similar event at York last month and can give another good account of himself. Strike Red is still searching for his first win of the campaign.
But he has been running well of late and followed a creditable sixth in the Stewards’ Cup with a good second at York where he travelled with plenty of enthusiasm. He has edged up 1 lb for that effort but is still 1 lb lower in the weights than when successful in a big-field handicap here last year.
14:25 – Purple Lily
PURPLE LILY has run well in the face of some stiff tasks this season and can capitalise on the drop in grade here. Purple Lily found only subsequent Oaks winner Ezeliya too strong when runner-up in the Group 3 Salsabil Stakes at Navan in April and then ran creditably when fifth in the Irish 1000 Guineas.
Despite looking slightly stretched by the trip, she posted her best effort yet when third in the Irish Oaks, and she could still do better over this shorter distance.
15:00 – Bedtime Story
BEDTIME STORY was a stunning winner of the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot and that nine-and-a-half-length success propelled her to the head of Timeform’s two-year-old standings.
She hasn’t needed to run near that level to win her two subsequent starts, but her Royal Ascot effort marks her out as the one to beat and she is 10 lb clear on Timeform’s ratings.
15:35 – Bradsell
BRADSELL was seen to good effect in the Nunthorpe as he could track the trailblazer on a favourable part of the course, but he still impressed with how he powered through that contest and looked in command from soon after halfway.
That was a second Group 1 for Bradsell (he also won the King’s Stand last season) and is the class act in this line-up.
16:10 – Henri Matisse
HENRI MATISSE has looked like a top prospect and stands out as the one to beat in the National Stakes. After winning a six-furlong Curragh maiden on debut, Henri Matisse showed much-improved form to win the Group 2 Railway Stakes over the same course and distance, scoring a shade cosily after taking a bit of time to hit top gear.
He made it three from three when landing the Futurity Stakes back here on his first start at seven furlongs and he was value for more than the winning margin of a length as he jinked inside the final furlong when seeming set to go clear.
He is 6 lb clear on Timeform’s ratings for this contest and still remains capable of better.
16:45 – Kyprios
KYPRIOS was beaten on both starts in a truncated campaign last season, including in this race 12 months ago, but things have gone more smoothly this term and he has looked back to his best.
He has won all four starts this season, including the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and the Goodwood Cup, and remains the one to beat in the staying division.
17:20 – Spirit d’Or
French raider SPIRIT D’OR was a close-up fourth in a five-furlong listed race at Deauville on her penultimate start and didn’t need to improve on that to get off the mark over the same trip at Moulins.
She looks competitive based on those pieces of form and could still do better after only three starts, particularly as she’s unexposed over six furlongs.
17:55 – Wigmore Street
WIGMORE STREET had disappointed in a conditions race at Tipperary but quickly got back on the up when winning the Irish Cambridgeshire here last month. Wigmore Street had plenty to do two furlongs out but kept on strongly, passing a host of rivals in the final furlong to lead close home.
He has a 7 lb higher mark to deal with here but doesn’t have many miles on the clock and the step up to a mile and a quarter could suit based on how he powered home last time.
