13:50 Over The Blues
OVER THE BLUES is drawn 25 and looks interesting. She won her maiden at Naas in June and makes her handicap debut of a mark of 92. She’ll need to improve a bit but is lightly-raced and Oisin Murphy takes the ride. She should have the right side of the draw at least too.
14:25 American Sonja
The older fillies look to have a chance here over the three-year-olds. Wingspan is going the right way and should be thereabouts again after finishing third to Tarawa in the Irish Oaks with Hanalia (who reopposes) in second. AMERICAN SONJA is interesting and ran well at Deauville last time. She versatile and may have a touch of class about her.
15:00 Simmering
A small but select field of five runners that has produced the next season’s Irish 1,000 Guineas winners in Fallen Angel and Tahiyra for the past two seasons. Bedtime Story comes in on a four-race winning run and deserves to be favourite. I’d like to see her price though.
As an alternative, SIMMERING relished the step up in trip to 7f when winning very well in France last time. Simmering could be the value play at the prices. She’s my nap on the card.
15:35 Bradsell & Washington Heights (each-way)
The Group One Flying Five Stakes has attracted a big field of 18 declared, and BRADSELL heads the market, having won the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York. Believing was a close second to her from a bad draw, and the draw in stall one now does little for her chances. Bradsell disappointed in this race last year on soft ground but, on balance looks the one to be on.
WASHINGTON HEIGHTS could out-run his odds dropped down to 5f now.
16:10 Aomori City
Henri Matisee looks the one to beat, but as always, it comes down to price. He’s unbeaten in three starts at this venue and Is certainly the best of the home defence. One that could be interesting is AOMORI CITY for Godolphin, as trainer Charlie Appleby has won three of the last six running of the Group 1 National Stakes.
His win at Goodwood looks a lot stronger now than it did at the time, and the form has been well-franked since. If Wolf Of Badenoch goes well at Doncaster on Saturday, it will be another pointer to his chances, as the third Cool Hoof Luke subsequently won the Gimcrack Stakes at York.
16:45 Kyprios
There are eight declared, but Al Qareem is down to run at Chester on Saturday, so is unlikely to run if he takes up that engagement. It’s very hard to look beyond the dual Ascot Gold Cup winner KYPRIOS, and even down to 1m 6f he should be good enough. He’s been really good this season in four wins since coming back from injury.
17:20 Canto Della Terra
A tough sales race where you’ll want to follow the effects the draw has had in the earlier races. CANTO DELLA TERRA is in stall two, which at first look doesn’t seem great, so I’ll make Donnacha O’Brien’s runner a tentative pick.
17:55 Himalayan Heights
Wigmore Street won the Paddy Power Irish Cambridgeshire at this venue last time over a mile, but I’m not convinced he’ll stay this 1m 2f trip. Ger Lyons’ HIMALAYAN HEIGHTS was outstayed up the hill at Galway over 1m 4f last time, so the drop back to 1m 2f should benefit him. He’s been dropped 1lb since that debut run in a handicap, and now that the penny has dropped, he can make amends. He still looks well handicapped to me.
