Aidan O’Brien fires three darts at the St Leger in a bid to win the final Classic of the British season on Saturday.
Illinois appears to be the stable’s first choice as Wayne Lordan takes the ride, although his record of one win from five races is in stark contrast to stablemate Jan Brueghel, who is unbeaten in three outings.
Grosvenor Square, the other Ballydoyle runner, also boasts an appealing profile after a 20l romp in the Irish St Leger Trial, but the trio face a battle against Irish Oaks heroine You Got To Me, supplemented for £50,000, who is bidding to become the first filly to win the Doncaster Classic since 2015.
St Leger odds can be found on the Paddy Power website and Paddy Power app, otherwise key historical trends from the last 10 renewals and a tip based off the big-race stats are below.
St Leger 2024 trends
CAREER WINS
- 10/10 had at least two wins on the board
Deira Mile is the first horse to fall by the wayside having only achieved one victory in his career to date.
RATING
- 9/10 were rated 108 or higher
If the handicapper is correct then Wild Waves (95) does not possess the quality to win the St Leger.
SEASON FORM
- 9/10 had at least one win that season
Sunway can be scratched from calculations having failed to get on the scoreboard this term.
CAREER RUNS
- 9/10 had run three to six times in their career
A trio of leading contenders – Grosvenor Square, Illinois and You Got To Me – could all be considered as exposed having all run seven times under rules.
GROUP FORM
- 8/10 had previously won a Group race
Jan Brueghel is the last horse standing and meets this trend. All the horses bar Deira Mile and Wild Waves have also landed Group honours, however.
LAST TIME OUT
- 7/10 had their most recent run within last 14 to 59 days
- 7/10 were placed in the top three on their previous outing
Jan Brueghel ticks both boxes thanks to his success in the Group 3 Gordon Stakes at Glorious Goodwood in early August. Wild Waves is the only runner not to meet the LTO statistics.
St Leger 2024 trends verdict
JAN BRUEGHEL emerges as the leading contender on the historical trends and gets the nod ahead of Grosvenor Square, Illinois and You Got To Me.
