13:50 Doncaster – Aftermath

It’s St Leger day on ITV Racing plus two races to enjoy from Chester. A Classic day starts here with the Group 2 Champagne Stakes for youngsters over 7f. Wolf of Badenoch is the form horse after his second at Goodwood while Chancellor scored nicely at this track last time, but at long odds I’ll chance AFTERMATH who I really loved when second at Newbury on debut.

The Justify colt really caught the eye on debut running, strongly behind the experienced Mukaber ,and while he will probably have to run 30lb better to score here I don’t think that is impossible. Wayne Lordan takes the ride for Aidan O’Brien. Has an entry in the Group 1 Dewhurst.

14:05 Chester – Al Qareem

ITV go to Chester for this Listed event over an extended 1m 4f. AL QAREEM doesn’t win very often but with a rating of 109, this is another fine opportunity for the Karl Burke-trained inmate. Pierre-Louis Jamin gets the big chance on a horse who ran well last time when chasing home Al Aasy at Newbury over a slightly shorter trip. My selection won this event last year so should be bang on.

14:25 Doncaster – Vintage Clarets

Now a terrific sprint handicap in the Portland over the unique distance of an extended 5f. There is a chance VINTAGE CLARETS is handicapped to go well here for Jamie Spencer and Richard Fahey. Indeed, the more I look at the jockey booking the more excited I get! My selection was fifth in this last year off 2lb higher than today’s mark of 90 and comes into the race on the back of a fair eighth of 22 at York when keeping on well. This is a slightly greater stamina test and I’m happy to have a decent each-way wager. Just hope the big draw is not a hindrance.

14:40 Chester – Zoffee

Here’s a handicap over 2m. ZOFFEE hasn’t done much since doing this column a right favour in the Chester Cup, but having gone up from 90 to 94 for his success, he is now back to 92 with conditions bang in his favour. Harry Davies is on top again for Hugo Palmer and he wasn’t totally disgraced at York last time. Every chance of scoring on his best form.

15:00 Doncaster – Kinross

Up in grade now for the Group 2 Park Stakes over 7f. This is hard for me as Lead Artist is one of my favourite horses but I’m not sure of him back at 7f. Indeed if he had gone up to 1m 2f from 1m, I wouldn’t have minded! For me this is a great chance for KINROSS to bounce back to winning ways for Ralph Beckett and Rossa Ryan. The former multiple Group 1 hero has been a little below his best this term, but his third to Audience at Goodwood in the Lennox was all right, and everything looks ideal for a decent performance.

15:40 Doncaster – Jan Brueghel

The big one of the week in the final British Classic of 2024, the St Leger Stakes for 3yo over an extended 1m 6f. JAN BRUEGHEL is the only unbeaten horse in the line-up and I’m hoping he can make it four out of four under the excellent Sean Levey for Aidan O’Brien. The Gordon Stakes hero kept on well that day, to deny Bellum Justum, and that form got a boost when the latter won a big pot at Kentucky Downs in the UK the other day.

Jan Brueghel has improved quickly in a short time and there might be loads more to come. He ran on strongly on his first try at 1m 4f and was still green at Goodwood. Everything about him suggests going up to the Leger trip will suit.

So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
