13:50 Doncaster – Aftermath
He ran very green on his debut at Newbury and only got the message when the race was over. It’s striking that the Ballydoyle team decide to pitch him straight into Group 2 company and he can cause a minor upset against some proven performers in the 7f Champagne Stakes.
14:05 Chester – La Yakel
The ground is going to be incredibly testing at Chester and it seemed to suit La Yakel this who won very well at Hamilton when they switched over towards the stands’ side rail last time. He should get a perfect tow into the contest from Al Qareem.
14:25 Doncaster – Vintage Clarets (each-way) & Holkham Bay (each-way)
I’ll take two against the field in this 5.5 furlong cavalry charge down the Doncaster straight. Vintage Clarets started very slowly last time and returns on a favourable mark. Holkham Bay looked like he was improving at a rate of knots prior to a major disappointment last time at York. He was drawn on the wrong side of the track that day and he gets a pass for that effort.
14:40 Chester – Vera Verto
The Irish challenger bumped into an improver in Prydwen last time at Killarney under similar conditions. He looks to have been given a real opportunity by the assessor now as she has only been nudged up 1lb for that effort. This could be a money grab before going back over jumps on a lenient mark this winter.
15:00 Doncaster – Lake Forest
William Haggas’ runner is not the biggest, but he certainly has a quality engine. He has put up two excellent efforts so far this season in the Commonwealth Cup and also at Newbury in the the Hackwood Stakes. Both times he’s looked as if the extra yardage over today’s 7f trip is going to be in his favour. Let’s just hope he behaves in the starting stalls this time.
15:40 Doncaster – Sunway
We can safely put a line through his last effort as he doesn’t seem to appreciate it when the ground is on the lively side. He has a good slice of class which will be needed to win the final Classic of the season and that natural speed he possesses can be used very late in the day to thwart another St Leger going back to Ireland and the Ballydoyle raiders.
16:15 Doncaster – Aerion Power
He looked really good when getting his head in front over a mile at Nottingham but nothing has gone in his favour since when stepped up to today’s trip of 10f. He’s been slowly away and left alone to come home in his own time in two subsequent runs. There’s a bit of pace in this contest for him to run at and also has the added advantage of Doncaster’s long straight. The season’s leading apprentice Joe Leavy is in the saddle.
