13:50 – Beauty Nation
It’s the start of the St Leger meeting on ITV Racing at Doncaster on Thursday and the action kicks off here with a handicap for juveniles over the extended 6f. BEAUTY NATION is of interest here for George Boughey and Billy Loughnane, even though she was turned over at short odds last time. The relatively cheap buy looked good at Kempton on debut and then had a hopeless start at Wolverhampton when long odds on. That was over 7f and she stays well, so the drop in trip is not ideal. But they will go at a pace here and she should stay on strongly.
14:25 – An Outlaw’s Grace (each-way)
Now a sales race for two-year-olds over the extended 6f. I tipped up AN OUTLAW’S GRACE when he was sixth at York last time in a big field and, to be quite frank, I was a little disappointed there. But I suspect my selection is a bit better than that effort and with a racing weight of 8st 11lb and a rating of 99, he really should have an each-way chance. Sean Levey is up, and again, I suspect he will finish off well. It’s worth noting that he missed a run at Sandown the other day over 7f, which clearly shows that stamina is no issue over this trip. Strong each-way claims.
15:00 – Desert Flower
Up in class here for the Group 2 May Hill Stakes for juveniles over 1m. Miss Tonnerre is interesting for an excellent stable. Still, it’s hard to escape the Godolphin runner DESERT FLOWER, who comes here unbeaten in two starts after facile victories at Newmarket. It’s easy to think there is loads more to come from the daughter of Night of Thunder, as she’s looked green in both of her wins. I suspect she’s excellent for Charlie Appleby and William Buick.
15:35 – Sumo Sam (each-way)
Another Group 2 in the Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes open to mares over an extended 1m6f. Night Sparkle can easily win this on form but flopped in last year’s event. That day, the contest went to SUMO SAM; with rain around this year, she looks overpriced to repeat the feat. The Paul and Oliver Cole-trained inmate flopped at Goodwood on debut this season and then had wind surgery. After that she missed another race at Goodwood and then was poor in a small field at Newbury behind Al Aasy. The ground that day, though, was fast, which doesn’t suit Sumo Sam. I’ll have a few quid on each-way.
16:10 – Harper’s Ferry
Here’s a handicap over 1m2f. Theory of Tides has to be better than we have seen recently but it’s HARPER’S FERRY that interests me off a mark of 93. The Ed Walker-trained gelding was once being considered for the Derby in 2024 but has some character and never made Epsom. He was last seen at Royal Ascot in June when eighth behind Calandagan in the King Edward VII Stakes. That effort suggests this slight drop in trip would be ideal. PJ McDonald gets the chance to get the best out of this horse with plenty of ability but much to prove.
So best of luck and pray for Yeeehaaas. You hear me Paddy?
